BILINGUAL IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY

Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation (CVLS) is a not-for-profit that provides free legal services to individuals in and around Chicago using volunteer attorneys. Last year 2,300 CVLS volunteers helped thousands of clients with their cases and legal issues.

Position Description

CVLS is looking for a bilingual (English/Spanish) attorney with 3-5 years of immigration law experience to provide legal consultations, advice and full representation to low-income immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers in a broad range of matters including petitions, consular matters, waivers, removal matters, appeals and other relevant applications, petitions and/or court filings with USCIS, DOJ, DOL and/or DOS. As CVLS’ only in-house immigration attorney, the lawyer will be responsible for overseeing our immigration program, screening new cases, managing a caseload and recruiting, supervising, and supporting new volunteers. They will also work with program partner AILA-Chicago and an existing volunteer base of attorneys with cases. Salary is $80,000 to $90,000 DOE.

Position Requirements

· A J.D. and a current, active Illinois law license.

· Professional fluency in oral and written English and Spanish.

· A minimum 3-5 years handling a variety of immigration cases.

· Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and in a team.

· Ability to direct and manage a program with minimal supervision, including both a personal caseload and supervision of volunteer attorneys on pro bono matters.

· Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.

· Experience working with LegalServer or the ability to learn quickly and accurately.

· Empathy, patience, a sense of humor, and a demonstrable commitment to working with low-income and minority clients.

· Ability to work with volunteer attorneys of varying skill levels and temperaments.

Additional Information

CVLS offers a collegial, casual, flexible, inclusive and friendly work environment. Staff members are mostly remote, with a few days a month in the office on a flexible schedule, though the office is available every day to anyone who prefers to come in. Some time in office is required for special events, required court appearances, and other dates as needed.
