JOB DESCRIPTION -

Under the supervision of the Facilities Automation Architect, the Direct Digital Controls Specialist installs, programs, operates, monitors, tests, re-commissions, and repairs CPS building automation systems (BAS) including HVAC, building lighting, fire and safety devices, and other integrated systems found in municipal facilities. Additionally, this position will be responsible for duties such as updating and maintaining the graphical web interface that enables systems monitoring and diagnosis.
The Direct Digital Controls Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
  • Performs installation, programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance of HVAC direct digital control (DDC) building automation systems and equipment.
  • Uses mechanical and control drawings, specifications, and work orders to assess work required and determine the proper installation and repair method to use.
  • Programs various HVAC devices such as network controllers, routers, gateways, programmable control units, remote input/output modules and local and remote workstations.
  • Adjusts sequence of operations of HVAC systems as needed by reprogramming building automation system devices and equipment.
  • Investigates operational dysfunctions and works with facility operations staff to resolve DDC operational difficulties.
  • Installs, maintains, and performs system optimization on DDC system components by testing and replacing non-functioning devices and ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Maintains logs of DDC system and equipment failures and documents system modifications and maintenance to increase operational efficiency and optimize effectiveness.
  • Monitors HVAC direct digital control building automation systems to ensure proper functionality.
  • Oversee patch management of servers assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Direct Digital Controls Specialist must possess the following qualifications:
Type of Education Required:
  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • Associate degree from an accredited college or university, or other vocational/technical training, preferred.
Training and Certification Requirement:
  • Technician Certification in Niagara, Metasys, or Webcontrol, required.
  • As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the employee must become a certified technician for one of the above-mentioned platforms (to be assigned) within one year of their CPS hire date.
Type of Experience Required:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with progressing levels of responsibility in the installation, programming, maintenance and repair of electronic direct digital control building automation systems, or a combination of DDC building automation and Windows desktop/server troubleshooting, installation, and configuration experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Capable of obtaining Nagara, Matasys and/or Webcontrol Technician Certification.
  • Strong communication skills (speaking - including presentations - listening, and writing).
  • Demonstrate high levels of instructional expertise, integrity, honesty, credibility, and the courage to make difficult yet necessary decisions.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills, e.g. ability to develop high performing teams united around a clear vision for serving schools and achieving student success.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with a variety of constituent groups, including external partners, to ensure the entire system operates in the most effective manner possible to support schools and principals.
  • Ability to define problems, analyze data, and outline valid conclusions and action steps.
  • Capable of Building, Updating, and Managing Windows Server 2008 .
  • Familiarity with Siemens, Johnson Controls Metasys, Honeywell, Alerton, Automated Logic Controls, Distech, Trane, Tridium and Lutron a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructural networking related to configuring devices for TCP/IP communications on an enterprise LAN system, including:
o DHCP, Static-IP, DNS and other communications mediums.
  • Strong background with break/fix methodologies and an ability to produce creative solutions to problems in the field.
  • Willing and able to travel between job sites as required to complete assigned duties.
Other requirements:
  • Access to transportation to travel to other sites is required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and vehicle access preferred.
Conditions of Employment
As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. “Up-to-date” on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.
