Day in the life of an Occupational Health Nurse: 

The Occupational Health Nurse promotes a culture of health and safety by creating an environment that supports employees’ optimal health using best practices and evidence-based techniques. Plans, implements, and evaluates programs and services designed to improve the health and safety of the employee and other non-employee groups performing duties at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC). Occupational Health Nurses coordinate employee care to effectively promote health, manage illness and injury, prevent disability, and facilitate return to work.

Here is what you will be doing: 

  • Reviews health history and performs pre-employment health assessments on all new employees, allied health professionals not covered under medical staff credentialing, and other contract, agency, volunteers and students per CRMC policy. 
  • Provides nursing services to include, but not limited to, drawing of titers and administration of needed vaccines, sick call and swabs/cultures as indicted, dispensing Latent TB medications, taking blood pressures, providing first aid treatment as needed and appropriate; refers employees to physicians as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and performs activities related to on-going employee health management to include annual immunizations, annual TB and Medical Surveillance, Respiratory Protection, Latent TB management, work site surveys, ergonomic and functional capacity evaluations, fit for duty and return to work evaluations, exposure/injury/illness care and Employee Wellness programs.
  • Conducts initial management, review and monitoring of all occupational injuries and illnesses; Occupational Health Nurses work with the employee as an advocate to facilitate the Worker’s Compensation process.
  • Utilizes results from data collection activities to include occupational injury and illness volumes and trends and prioritizes areas of focus or improvement.
  • Participates in and reports to safety and infectious disease committees.
  • Establishes and maintains records within state and federal laws, ensuring confidentiality and privacy of health and personal information.
  • Critically reviews relevant literature and other credible resources to develop evidence-based interventions and occupational health nursing strategies.
  • Practices nursing ethically, competently, and within the legal scope of practice, ensuring compliance of all requirements of local, state, and federal laws; obtains and maintains necessary licenses and certifications required for practice.
  • Coordinates with Infection Control in the investigation, reporting and follow-through related to employee exposures and infectious or communicable diseases.
  • Educates, counsels, and coaches employees on identifying, reducing, and eliminating health and safety risks.

Here is what you will need:

  • Current Wyoming Registered Nurse License or enhanced Nurse Licensure (eNLC)
  • One (1) or more years of clinical and/or acute care experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Cheyenne Regional AHA RQI within 14 calendar days of start date 

Nice to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Two (2) years of clinical or acute care experience as a Registered Nurse
