Cherry Health is Hiring an Optician I - Heart of the City Health Center - Vision Near Grand Rapids, MI

Responsible for assisting patients with frame selection, eyeglass orders, verification, fitting and dispensing of eyewear. This is a full - time, non - exempt, benefit eligible. Typically working Monday, Wednesday, Friday, from 8:00am - 5:00pm, Tuesday and Thursday 10-7.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Sales experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed above. 

Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and verify necessary patient information, update data, and monitor status of patient accounts and insurance information at each visit.
  • Maintain accurate electronic health record, assist with scheduling and check-in for patients, create encounter in EHR, and order glasses through Optik at time of order.
  • Determine patients’ needs and activities/hobbies prior to frame selection.
  • Demonstrate appropriate frame selection for pediatric and adult patients (size/shape/material) based upon patient needs as well as lens material and power.
  • Perform accurate verification of lenses with manual lensometer including power, frame reference point, prism base direction and magnitude.
  • Take accurate base curve measurements with a lens clock.
  • Take accurate pupillary distance with pupilometer.
  • Measure accurate optical centers.
  • Measure accurate segment heights for flat top bifocal, trifocal, and/or progressives on patient with adequately adjusted stock frame.
  • Assure accurate documentation, education and patient signature of cost agreement and share expected delivery time frame.
  • Order and receive glasses through approved labs and according to established protocols.
  • Notify patients when orders are delayed.
  • Assist with inventory and maintain adequate optical supply stock. 
  • Assure organization of frame boards and weekly cleaning of lenses/frames.
  • Verify all eyewear using check-list for accuracy of frame and lenses compared to the doctor’s prescription and accurately document findings per protocol.
  • Demonstrated team work by taking initiative and collaborating to help others
  • Ability to efficiently perform optical duties
  • Demonstrated computer and typing competency and efficiency
  • Ability to make decisions using industry standards that can be checked with precise measurements of accuracy
  • Excellent customer service skills including creating a friendly, warm, and engaging atmosphere (e.g. smiling, acknowledging patients by name, introducing yourself with handshake, giving full attention to the patient, provide appropriate education, assure understanding, assure patient satisfaction with good and services, thanking every patient and asking if there is anything else you can do for them today).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel to other sites as determined by business needs.
  • Assure all verified orders are benched properly prior to optical delivery
  • Assure accurate frame adjustment and seg height verification on patient while dispensing eyewear and perform standard pantoscopic tilt adjustments on all progressives.
  • Assure patient education regarding usage and cleaning instructions of glasses.
  • Independently trouble-shoot most patient complaints, including non-adapt, and remakes in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with Supervisor to resolve complaints
  • Assist with on-site training of optical staff as directed by supervisor.
  • Assist with inventory as requested
  • Perform eyeglass adjustment and repairs as needed.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, maintaining frame kits, replacing equipment, and other duties.
  • Submit billing to insurance in an accurate and timely way.
  • Weekly review of unbilled report and assure correct claims within 48hrs.
  • Review sliding fee scale costs as needed.
  • Understand and adhere to CH’s compliance standards as they appear in CH’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and CH’s regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Occasional travel to other sites may be necessary to meet business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Specific Duties and Responsibilities for School-Linked Programs: 

  • Enter orders into Optik within 24 hours.
  • Travel to and from schools.
  • Make phone calls to classrooms and/or escort children as required and maintain professional interaction with all school staff.
  • Notify parents when orders are delayed or when child was not in school for dispense.
  • Create dispensing schedule and verify time/location with schools.
  • Prepare and maintain log of orders, received, verification, dispensed, remakes, and replacements
  • Travel to and from schools and to/from Ferguson Clinic for completion of orders/dispensing.
  • Assure adequate frames for selection in school supply cases
  • Provide school specific education for students with glasses and appropriately communicate with school nurses and teachers per protocol.
