DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS - Chenango County has an opening for a Director of Public Works in the Public Works Department. This is a Department Head position responsible for planning, directing and supervising the activities of the Chenango County Department of Public Works. The incumbent oversees the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, bridges and highways and the operation and maintenance of the County’s landfill and recycling/transfer stations. The Director of Public Works is also responsible for the implementation and supervision of waste management policies and procedures related to recycling and source separation and oversees such other public works activities as may be assigned by the Board of Supervisors. A significant amount of travel to various work sites is required to fulfill the duties of the position. The incumbent possesses all of the powers and duties prescribed by law of a County Highway Superintendent. Appointment to this position is made by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors. An incumbent is appointed for a six year term. Work is performed under the general direction of the Public Works Committee of the Chenango County Board of Supervisors with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out the duties of the position. Supervision is exercised over all the staff of the Department of Public Works. Does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Suggested minimum qualifications only. Preference will be given to candidates with a Professional Engineering License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
(1.) At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the County’s insurance carrier.
(2.) This is a Department Head position and, therefore, a Public Officer position under NYS Public Officer’s Law. Accordingly, an appointee must comply with the County residency requirement set forth in NYS Public Officer’s Law and County of Chenango Local Law No. 2 of 1977 which means they must be or become a resident of and be domiciled within Chenango County and maintain such residency and domiciliary for as long as they are employed in the position.

Position status: Unclassified - Term Appointment.
The position starts at a range of $85,000 - $98,800, depending on experience and qualifications, and includes a full benefits package.
