Formerly the family home of Mabel and Leslie Cheek, Cheekwood now serves the public as a botanical garden, arboretum, and museum with period rooms and art galleries. Cheekwood’s mission is to stimulate the mind and nurture the spirit, for not only our visitors, but our staff as well.

We are currently seeking a School Programs Educator to join our team. The School Programs Educator helps facilitate school field trips.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assists School and Outreach Programs Manager with running school field trips.
• Arrives one hour before scheduled field trip to set up supplies and stations in garden spaces.
• Stays after field trip has ended to clean up supplies and spaces then restocks for the following days trip(s).
• Learns Cheekwood’s standard aligned field trip curriculum for grades Pre-K-12th.
• Facilitates field trip curriculum including leading conversation with students while conducting the activities.
• Helps School and Outreach Programs Manager provide instructions to docents or volunteers assisting with field trips.
• Prepares field trip materials for upcoming field trips.
• Creates a positive environment that encourages active learning for students.
• Knowledge of Cheekwood’s Education Department and the mission of the institution.
• Other duties as assigned.

• At least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Horticulture, or related educational field with teaching certification and previous teaching experience is desired in traditional or non-traditional settings.
• Experience conducting educational programming is also desired.
• Experience following lesson plans.
• Knowledge of basic teaching methods, as well as non-traditional techniques for early childhood development.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Must work well without direct supervision and have excellent time management skills.
• Must have a desire to work with children.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations calmly and follow protocols.
• Responsible attitude and professionalism toward career essential.

Required Work Schedule and Hours:

• Field Trips run weekly from mid-March to the end of May, Tuesday-Friday, and September through November, Tuesday-Friday. *Reduced hours available weekly from May-August and December-February,
• Guided field trips are scheduled between the hours of 9AM-1PM.
• Applicants must be available 8AM-2PM on the days they are scheduled to run field trips. Hours within that timeframe will differ depending on the start time of the booked school group. Available hours will differ depending on the time of year.
