Chatham County is Hiring an Utility Service Worker Near Pittsboro, NC

Performs manual and semiskilled work repairing and maintaining water distribution lines and appurtenances, reading water meters, operating equipment, and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Utility Superintendent.
  • Locates and reads water meters on assigned routes and records usage and keeps records of meters readings and reports meters not accessible for reading;
  • Evaluates meter operations, identifies defective meters, sizes and installs meters for new services and repairs and replaces old meters;
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs water mains, hydrants, meter valves, clamps and related pipeline apparatus;
  • Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, loaders, trenchers, boring equipment, etc.; 
  • Oversees the loading and transportation of equipment and materials and inspects and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs;
  • Inspects, locates and repairs meter and line leaks and advises customers of repairs made or needed;
  • Processes work orders and connects and disconnects water service as requested or required for non-payment;
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints, takes necessary action and relays more complex problems to supervisor;
  • Replaces damaged landscaping, sows grass, and plants shrubbery as needed;
  • Serves as the crew leader on assigned tasks and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in construction, maintenance/repair work, meter reading or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work; 
  • Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; 
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; 
  • Ability to use common hand and power tools; 
  • Ability to operate and maintain automotive, mechanical, heavy machinery and construction equipment; 
  • Ability to stay in good physical condition; 
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions and 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking, hearing, using hands to finger, handling, feeling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembling or fabricating parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements
  • Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
  • Serves on call for emergencies and as backup for on-call staff.
  • Must be able to work overtime on short notice.
  • May be required to work on weekends and holidays as needed.
