Student Support Specialist Job Description

Must have:

Masters degree in social work or counseling

State licensure in social work or counseling

Experience in individual and small group counseling.

Knowledge of community resources

Knowledge of The North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law

Knowledge of The McKinney Vento Act

Strong ability to form and sustain relationships with students, families, faculty, and community

• Support students’ social/emotional health through short term counseling and community referrals.
• Provide social/emotional instruction within the classroom setting.
• Response to mental health or behavioral crises including risk or threat of danger to self or others.
• Provide faculty enrichment in areas of student mental and behavioral health
• Facilitate school wide participation in national campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week
• Participates on a Student Services Team, identifying students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinate with other stakeholders..
• Complete all tasks in accordance with the North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law
• Complete all tasks in accordance with the McKinney Vento Act
• Conduct home visits as needed
• Provide basic need support for families and community referrals as needed
• Participate in various school teams as the behavioral/mental health specialist
• Coordinate special programs during holidays for families in need
• Gather and analyze data to help determine needs and targeted accommodations for students.
