 Job Description

Position: Teacher

Reports to: Executive Directorrevised 8/2/2022

Terms of Employment: School Calendar YearWage/Hour Status: Exempt

Primary Purpose: Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Collaborate with Teachers, Therapists, and staff members to enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in school, at home, and in society. 

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent work experience.

  2. Teaching Certificate preferred 12 hours in subject area coursework from an accredited university or equivalent coursework experience.

  3. General knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and child development.

  4. Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

  5. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  6. Proficient in technology and adaptive technology.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with Teachers, Therapists, and staff members to enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in school, at home, and in society.

  2. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels that fulfill the requirements of students' IEP plans and show written evidence of preparation as required, including lesson plans.

  3. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in abilities and learning styles of students.

  4. Present the subject matter in a clear, concise manner, providing appropriate visual aids, demonstration, and level of assistance.

  5. Assist with assessment of students learning and use results to plan instructional activities.

  6. Work with other members of the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods.

  7. Assist with planning, supervision, and training of assignments for teacher assistants and/or volunteers.

  8. Employ the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.

  9. Assure daily documentation of student learning and progress reports as required.

  10. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, including Camp Chase, Open House, Fundraisers, School Accreditation, and/or Community Outreach.

  11. Be a positive role model and mentor for students, supporting the mission of the school.

  12. Assist with creating and maintaining an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

  13. Manage and document students' behavior in a calm, consistent, and respectful manner. 

  14. Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom, and personal hygiene.

  15. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

  16. Assist in the selection of books, technology, equipment, and other instructional materials.

  17. Establish and maintain open lines of communication by assisting with parent-teacher conferences, daily caregiver contact, notes, etc.

  18. Assist with compilation, maintenance, and filing of all reports, records, and other required documents.

  19. Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, volunteers, and community members.

  20. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

  21. Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedure for absences.

  22. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

  23. Attend and participate in planning meetings and special events as assigned.

  24. Follow all school policies, procedures, and Minimum Standards. Ensure the same from staff under your direct supervision. 

  25. Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of school business.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental factors:

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and crawling.

Regular heavy lifting of students.

Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. 

Some students will exhibit aggressive behaviors. De-escalation and physical restraint may be used to maintain the safety of staff members and students. Training in these areas is provided. A staff member must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
