Literacy Coordinator

Position Description

Role Type: Full-time, Permanent 10-month position (shared between GCCS at the RMSC and GCCS - Flour City Campuses).

Start Date: Mid-December, 2023

Starting Salary Range: $55,000 - $70,000 (plus additional summer stipend pay)

Reports To: Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Who We Are

The Genesee Community Charter School (GCCS) is one of the oldest charter schools in the Rochester area grounded in researched best practices and nationally recognized as a high-performing EL Education school. GCCS enrolls approximately 330 students from diverse backgrounds in kindergarten through sixth grade across two campuses located at the Rochester Museum and Science Center and former Colgate Crozer Divinity Campus.

Genesee Community Charter School’s curriculum focuses on local history and the natural world and—as an EL Education school – students are immersed in three interdisciplinary learning expeditions each year. Classes frequently venture into the community for purposeful and rigorous field studies integral to their ongoing learning experiences. Music, visual arts, dance, and creative movement are integrated into the academic and social life at Genesee Community Charter School. The school is nationally recognized for its implementation of the EL Education model and its approach to arts integration. Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Genesee Community Charter School (GCCS) Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Literacy Coordinator (LC) serves as the “keeper” of best literacy practices and curriculum for the organization. This includes foundational literacy grounded in phonological and phonemic awareness, comprehension of complex texts in our knowledge-based curriculum, synthesis of reading towards writing high-quality products for an authentic audience, and oracy and public speaking skills. The Literacy Coordinator is the instructional leader of literacy standards who strives to create a vision that aligns to the GCCS Mission to foster children’s natural abilities to be articulate communicators, reflective questioners, critical thinkers, and skilled problem solvers. The Literacy Coordinator, working in close partnership with the District Instructional Leadership Team, promotes the professional growth of every teacher and ensures that professional development, feedback and coaching are aligned and in service to the expectations and values of literacy at GCCS. The Literacy Coordinator also works directly with students to support benchmark assessments and prepares GCCS Student Ambassadors to lead student-led school tours.

Literacy Coordinator Qualifications:

  • Master in Elementary Education or Literacy required
  • New York State Teacher Certification required
  • Classroom experience in Elementary Education required
  • Experience with writing curriculum preferred

Literacy Coordinator Job Responsibilities:

  • Reports to Director of Curriculum and Instruction
  • Directly supports ELA intervention teachers
  • Support teachers in the development of ELA curriculum materials and building teacher capacity to teach EL Education’s Foundational Skills Literacy Curriculum
  • On-boarding of new teachers
  • Plan and lead professional development focused on ELA
  • Support curriculum standards mapping
  • Instructional coaching and mentorship
  • Coordinate with Student Support Team to provide ELA Tier 2 and 3 interventions as needed
  • Support classroom management utilizing Responsive Classroom and Restorative Practices and structures
  • District Instructional Leadership Team member
  • Professional Development Advisory Crew member
  • Support teachers with student benchmark assessments
  • Order ELA materials in conjunction with Director of Curriculum and Instruction
  • Data analysis
  • Prepares Student Ambassadors to lead school-based student tours
  • Support other school needs such as arrival and dismissal process
  • Adhere to GCCS policies and procedures as outlined in the Staff Handbook, staff bulletins, and other documents

This position is a 10-month salary position. In addition, all staff are expected to attend 2-3 weeks of mandatory professional development in August where staff will receive additional compensation.
