General Definition of Work

The Teacher during summer school, under moderate supervision, provides leadership in an educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Create a culture of effectiveness, by setting high standards and expectations for all students
  • Plan a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students
  • Create a classroom environment that provides for student engagement in the learning process and enables students to achieve learning objectives
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including students with disabilities and limited English proficiencies
  • Prepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in accordance with goals established by the district and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to students
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with the appraisal of student needs, requirements of North Carolina Department NCDPI and district curriculum framework and knowledge of human growth and development including the Common Core and NC Essential Standards
  • Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives
  • Diagnose the learning challenges of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central office staff as required. Provides input when necessary to student IEPs
  • Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Act as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program and fulfills requirements as designated in the North Carolina School Test Coordinator's Handbook, the Proctor's Guide for the North Carolina Testing Program and the North Carolina State Board of Education Policy GCS-A-010
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the district
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required to do so under reasonable terms
  • Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, teacher assistants, substitutes and volunteers
  • Appraise his/her effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strive to maintain and improve professional effectiveness
  • Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program
  • Participate in a cooperative effort with faculty and staff to plan, implement and evaluate programs of continuing school improvement
  • Utilize technology and current research in instruction
  • Utilize classroom management techniques conducive to an effective classroom climate.
  • Maintain a professional relationship between school and parents
  • Maintain contact with parents or care-givers through parent-teacher conferences, telephone, or written communications
  • Encourage parent involvement through school activities, connecting home and school
  • Identify specific objectives and plans a program for individualized and group instruction
  • Prepare, administer, and correct test and record results; evaluate student achievements
  • Use appropriate techniques and strategies which promote and enhance critical, creative and evaluate thinking capabilities of students
  • Use appropriate differentiated instructional strategies and materials that reflect each student's culture, learning styles, special needs, and socio-economic background
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the assigned subject matter or content area
  • Performs related duties as assigned

  • Comprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree in Education preferred
  • Valid, or renewing, NC Teaching license in content specific area required
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
