General Definition of Work

The Security Associate during summer school, under general supervision, provides a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors by patrolling/monitoring all activity at assigned location(s). The Security Associate maintains visibility and vigilance, establishes rapport with and relates professionally with students and staff.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Respond, report and deter inappropriate actions or activities from both internal and external sources
  • Run traffic control points where assigned
  • Evaluate prevention measures, maintain crisis plans, and respond to emergencies
  • Provide security and crowd control as assigned
  • Assist administrative staff in lockdown procedures
  • Prepare the "crash box" for the school
  • Work with School Resource Officer and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Police Department on crime prevention techniques
  • Escalate building and grounds safety concerns to appropriate personnel
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Comprehensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies
  • Knowledge of the National Incident Command System for use in critical incidents
  • Knowledgeable of current first-response tactics and techniques
  • Knowledge of current first-response tactics and techniques, including Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Program
  • Ability to perform, random metal searches, soft target identification, and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design functions
  • Ability to perform effectively and efficiently in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment

  • Ability to diffuse differences through conflict resolution
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations

  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment

Education and Experience

  • GED or High School Diploma required
  • Three years of related work experience required
  • NIMS (National Incident Management System) Certification, levels 100, 200, 700 required
  • Prior military and/or law enforcement experience preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
