Charles River Center is Hiring a Skills Trainer- Newton Near NEEDHAM, MA

The Charles River Center is a nonprofit organization and leader in supporting/advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. INTRODUCTION 

Skills Trainers are responsible for working with individuals with special needs and their families in a variety of areas including, community integration, behavior management and social skills. We are looking for a Skills Trainer who is hands-on, alert, detail oriented with an upbeat and loving personality. Schedules are arranged with the family receiving the services and the Charles River Center Family Support Navigators will monitor payroll.

DESCRIPTION 

In need of a Skills Trainer to support a 30yr old young man who lives in Newton, MA with his parents. This young man is need of a Skills Trainer to assist with independence, volunteering opportunities, creating a weekly schedule, engaging in more community outings, and staying active by going to the gym/walking trail and/or walking the dog. This young man needs assistance with social interactions and creating/keeping relationships with his peers. This young man can read and use the computer (he uses programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email). This young man enjoys a variety of activities such as going to the zoo, Castle Island, bowling, the mall, the library and playing mini golf! This young man is a visual learner and requires things to be explained with written visual cues and requires a weekly schedule outlining his daily tasks. This young man is polite, friendly, empathetic, an overall happy person who often keeps to himself and can complete many tasks independently. This young man mainly needs help establishing a daily routine to engage in the outside world competently with full self-confidence

SCHEDULE: 16hrs/wk (Afternoons preferred but days are flexible and open for discussion) 

RATE: $21/hr-$23/hr (based on qualifications and experience)

PRIMARY DUTIES 

-Provide supervision of the individual receiving services when needed. Any prolonged unsupervised time should be reviewed and agreed upon with the family.

-Read and follow any behavior plan/interaction guidelines that are set forth by the individual’s team.

-Develop plans that will enable the individual to acquire specific required skills and behavior in areas such as executive functioning, employment, relationships, social, etc.

-Communicate with the individual to understand their goals/ambitions and develop plans to achieve these goals.

-Support the individual receiving services to integrate into the community & participate in their preferred community-based activities as appropriate and assist them in developing social and life skills.

-Notify the Family Support Navigator, the Program Director, or the Director of Family and In-Home Supports of any problems, conflicts, or mishaps that may occur while providing in-home & Day services.

-Follow the families’ requests about the individual’s diet, interventions, medications, & preferred activities.

-Collaborate and communicate with the family about updates, changes, and other information that might impact the individual’s support. 

-When requested by the family, attend collaborative meetings when appropriate to share information and participate in the individual’s goal planning.

-Demonstrate effective use of Positive Behavioral Supports. 

-Complete a unique progress note for each completed shift, with a short review of goals that were worked on. Complete semi-annual progress updates as requested by the family or CRC Support Navigator. 

QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Health sciences or Social Work preferred but not required. College student pursuing such a degree or 4-8 years’ experience in working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities.

-Successful completion and maintenance of the following trainings: CPR/FA, Human Rights; Universal Precautions; Mandated Reporting; DPPC; Fire Safety and Vehicle Safety. 

-Must have experience implementing basic skill programs using ABA principles. 

-Strong knowledge of behavioral individuals and ability to distinguish different coping skills. 

-Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

-Must be willing to authorize a Criminal History Background Check (CORI) and release information concerning allegations from Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC), Department of Disability Services (DDS), and other agencies. 

-Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform these essential functions. 

-Driver’s License that is valid in Massachusetts and reliable personal transportation
