Job Summary
The Director of Learning Skills will provide educational support services to medical students in the CDU/UCLA Medical Education program; provide educational counseling in individual and group settings; provide educational assessments to evaluate student progress and effectiveness throughout the four years of medical school; and develop essential educational support programs to ensure the academic success of each individual student.
The Director of Learning Skills for the CDU/UCLA Medical Education Program will report to the Senior Associate Dean for the CDU/UCLA Medical Education Program and the Sr. Director, Study Skills and Certification Testing
Essential Duties
Assess, identify, evaluate and resolve learning issues of students from diverse educational backgrounds. Assess learning styles and individual strengths and weaknesses and provide individual academic work plans to ensure that students will perform more effectively
Oversee the design and delivery of programs focused on assisting medical students with their critical thinking skills, study and learning skills.
Interview individual students to evaluate their academic concerns, learning styles, overall approaches to learning and processing information.
Interview individual students with learning issues and at-risk students, devise and recommend strategies to aid students during the process of correction, and make the appropriate referrals when needed.
Plan and conduct learning skills workshops to address overall learning skill methodology and approach, knowledge organization, time management, stress management, and test preparation for standardized examinations (i.e., USMLE, Shelf and Clerkship examinations, MCAT).
Assist in the development and management of student retention programs and licensure exam preparation programs.
Assist individual students in the development of individual USMLE licensure examination study plans.
Assist individual students in the development of individual Shelf Examination study plans for third year medical school clerkships
Develop and implement systems for monitoring the academic performance and progress of students over the course of the entire medical school experience.
Maintain and keep records of performance and individual improvement of students.
Prepare reports of the following: numbers of students seen in advisement sessions, participant roster for learning skills workshops and end-of-the-year progress reports for all four years of the medical curriculum.
Conduct evaluations for learning skills workshops and prepare reports.
Provide statistical information, trends and reports to enhance programs and service delivery.
Establish administrative and professional policies, procedures and standards for learning skills support activities.
Assist in the management of an academic resource library (and electronic version) containing study-skill material and basic science reference material.
Collaborate with other departments within the University and serve as a liaison to both DGSOM at UCLA and Charles R. Drew University faculty and clerkship directors to provide comprehensive support to medical students
Attend the DGSOM at UCLA Progress and Promotions Committee meetings.
Attend and participate in national, regional and local meetings and conferences related to medical student retention and academic enhancement.
Expand and help to direct the summer pre-matriculation study skills course.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Regionally accredited Master’s degree in Educational Psychology, Medical Education or a related field required.
Three to five years of related experience in educational support, preferably in learning skills service or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience providing educational assessment and intervention strategies to diverse adult learners, preferably in the biological sciences.
Minimum Requirements
Ability to analyze learning outcomes and identify underlining reasons for individual differences in learning.
Demonstrated familiarity with a variety of psycho-educational measures, standardized exams, and test-taking strategies.
Demonstrated knowledge of assessment and counseling techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to create, compose and edit written materials.
Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Familiarity with medical school curriculum preferred.
Must possess excellent computer skills and be proficient in MS Windows, Word, Excel, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent degree preferred.
