The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of High School Jewish History Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. The position combines classroom teaching with the opportunity to work in a collaborative, dedicated, and highly skilled team in delivering an outstanding, well rounded Jewish history education to committed and engaged high school students in a pluralist environment. Courses emphasize critical thinking and analysis, research and argumentation (both written and oral), collaboration, civil discourse, reflection and identity development. Subjects include a survey of Jewish history, Israel, Arab-Israeli Conflict, American Jewish History, World Jewry, and more.

This position also includes the opportunity to work on an exciting new venture, the CESJDS Center for Excellence and Engagement in Jewish History. As a member of the CEEJH, they will have the opportunity to give public lectures, write articles for publication, serve as a consultant to other schools, and lead professional development sessions on Jewish History content and pedagogy.

The ideal candidate will have three or more years of highly successful formal teaching experience and demonstrated passion for and excellence in the teaching of Jewish history. They are deeply knowledgeable about the scope of Jewish history through the ages, historical methodology and have particular depth and interest in teaching modern Jewish history and Israel-related courses, as well as in elevating Mizrahi and Sephardic voices as part of curriculum. They are comfortable engaging in difficult conversations and in teaching to students with a rich variety of Jewish backgrounds, and they are able to balance academic rigor with the work of identity development within their classroom.

The ideal candidate is creative and collaborative. Student-centered learning, simulations, rich conversation and debate, and the active pursuit of deep questions are the hallmarks of their classes. The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to build positive relationships with students, manage a classroom, and is comfortable working with a range of learners while pushing students to identify themselves as part of the chain of Jewish history, past, present and future.

Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of Jewish History courses to students in grades 9-12

  • Participate in team meetings to review curriculum and discuss student progress;

  • Work collaboratively within the Upper School Jewish History department and high school faculty

  • Student advising

  • Partner with members of the Jewish History department and CEEJH to provide programming, offer lectures, write articles, consult with other schools, and provide professional development sessions on Jewish history content and pedagogy

  • Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal

  • BA in Jewish Studies, History, Israel Studies, Jewish History, Jewish Education, History, or a related field; MA preferred but not required.

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience working collaboratively

  • Experience in differentiated instruction and working with students with diverse learning needs is preferred.

  • Fluency with technology required

  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) required.
