Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is Hiring a Parent Peer Leader (Part-Time) - Pediatrics - Manhattan Near New York, NY

Responsibilities:

The Parent Peer Leader is responsible for providing valuable support for caregivers of children. The incumbent will assess caregiver needs, identify community resources, provide education, conduct trainings, and facilitate support groups.

  • Link parents of children with special needs to information and supports
    • Refer parents to parent networks and community resources
    • Share community resources
  • Promote and facilitate parent activities
    • Promote and facilitate parent groups
    • Promote and register parents for educational workshops
    • Arrange and coordinate social events for parents
    • Track parent participation at monthly parent groups and workshops
  • Create and translate materials
    • Create and translate parent workshop flyers, presentations, and handouts
    • Work with the Health Education and Engagement Team to develop health education and outreach materials for parents of children with special needs
  • Provide a parent voice
    • Advocate on behalf of parents of children with special needs
    • Serve as the connection between the Health Center, parent networks, and community organizations
    • Inform the Health Center of topics of interest to parents
    • Identify and maintain a library of resources of interest to parents
  • Participate in parent trainings
    • Attend trainings to learn knowledge and skills on parenting a child with special needs, disability and education service systems, and advocating for children with special needs
  • Conduct parent trainings
    • Conduct evidence-based training for caregivers to improve their child's social communication and manage challenging behaviors (Caregiver Skills Training program)
  • Help to promote the goals of the pediatric unit and the Health Center
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Parent of one or more child with special health care needs
  • High school diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred
  • Proficiency in English and Chinese dialect required
  • Basic computer skills including e-mail and familiarity with Word and Excel
  • Able to represent perspective of other families in addition to their own
  • Willing to contribute time and energy to test/pilot potential solutions and strategies
  • Be interested, motivated, willing and informed

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $19.00 - 25.00 per hour
  • 403(b) retirement savings plan
