Position Title: Finance Manager

Reports to: US Head of Operations

Position: Full-Time, Exempt 

Location: Remote, within the United States; Preferably Houston, TX

About Pratham

Established in 1995, Pratham USA, a 501(c)(3) organization, focuses on providing education to children in Mumbai's slums. Collaborating with governments, communities, parents, teachers, and volunteers, Pratham addresses educational gaps to ensure "every child in school is learning well."

Operating in 21 of India's 29 states, Pratham annually reaches millions of children and youth. The organization's influence extends globally through the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), inspiring similar assessments in fourteen countries worldwide.

Pratham's key initiatives include literacy and learning interventions for children aged 3-14, vocational training for economic self-sufficiency, a girls' education program for female dropouts aged 14 and above, research and advocacy efforts on children's learning, and edtech solutions empowering students with self-driven curricula.

Highlighting its impact, Pratham reaches millions of children and youth in India through operations in 23 cities, 21 states, and two union territories. Despite Covid-19 challenges, Pratham has directly reached over 500,000 children with tailored learning, served 20,000 communities, assisted 200,000 children in catching up on lost learning, provided a "second chance" for 4,000 young women to earn their secondary school certificate, trained over 50,000 youth, and placed 27,000 in jobs.

Additionally, Pratham has equipped more than 700 partners with digital learning content through Pradigi Open School. The ASER survey inspires a global network of citizen-led assessments in 14 countries across three continents.

The Opportunity

Pratham USA is seeking an experienced non-profit finance professional with a background and proven skills to become an integral part of the organization's Finance and Accounting team. This role is for a proactive individual who can work independently and with minimal supervision, and who has the ability to communicate, collaborate and influence at a high level. The Finance Manager reports directly to the Head of Operations at Pratham USA.

Impact Areas

Accounting:

  • Manage all accounting activities, including payroll functions, reconciliations, shared allocations, and restricted assets.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Review payroll before submission.
  • Design, administer, and oversee accounting structure, fiscal policies, internal controls, and systems (QuickBooks Desktop).
  • Supervise and support staff accountant.

Audit and Tax Filings:

  • Lead preparation and review of year-end audited financial statements with independent auditors.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual Federal, State, and local tax returns (forms 990, 199, RRF1, etc.).

Budgeting:

  • Lead the preparation of organizational budgets and financial plans.
  • Provide fiscal management, tracking income and expenses, reporting against budget, updating forecasts, and monitoring cash flow.
  • Present accurate and timely budget and financial reports to the Board/Leadership.
  • Ensure monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.

Contracts:

  • Ensure acceptable requirements and tracking abilities for contracts.
  • Monitor compliance and reporting synchronization with all departments.
  • Review grant budget applications.
  • Review financial reports with the management team.

Reporting:

  • Develop reports for enhanced monitoring of programs, restricted grants, cash flow projections, and board-restricted net assets.
  • Conduct long-term financial modeling for strategic planning.

Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all government regulations, including those related to employment and charitable registrations.

Insurance:

  • Oversee risk management, including organizational insurance coverage.

Governance:

  • Provide support to the Leadership team in managing/reporting to the Board of Directors and committees.
  • Attend Board meetings as necessary and document actions through minutes.

Other:

  • Identify and implement solutions to improve financial functions, including adopting new technologies and programs for enhanced efficiency.
  • Handle miscellaneous tasks as they arise.
