Job Title:

EC Teacher Assistant

Salary:

$16.05 per hour

Benefits:

Full benefits including paid holidays, sick leave, annual leave, holiday pay, health insurance and retirement.

Qualifications:

  1. All applicants must be designated as “Highly Qualified”. 48 college credits or 7 credits in core subject matter and passing WorkKeys test scores.
  2. Training and experience working with children with special needs.
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To:

Principal and/or designee, usually the classroom teacher.

Job Goal:

To provide exceptional education students (individually or in groups) with physical help and emotional support so they can benefit from the instructional program.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with the instruction and management of students in the following ways:
 
  1. Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
 
  1. Guides and helps students with curriculum tasks set up by the teacher. Works with students (individually or in small groups) to reinforce materials initially introduced by the teacher.
 
  1. Assists with behavior management and other disciplinary procedures in a manner consistent with policies and expectations of teacher and the school. Keeps the supervising teacher informed of any problem with specific students.
 
  1. Communicates with regular/special education teachers about student problems or special information as appropriate.
 
  1. Communicates with, contacts, and responds to parents as directed by the teacher. Maintains confidentiality of information about students.
 
  1. Assists with the physical needs of students in the following ways:
 
  1. Assists the student(s) in such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, using the bathroom, and so on.
  2. Performs simple errands and tasks for student(s) such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, and the like, as needed given the student’s condition. Accompanies the student(s) when trips to the office or other locations are necessary.
 
  1. Performs classroom health procedures, when necessary, under the supervision of the school nurse.
 
  1. Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student evaluation team conferring about students to whom assigned.
 
  1. May be asked to serve as the EC substitute teacher, as appropriate, if needed. Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
 
  1. Assists with morning/afternoon bus duty, breakfast and lunch duty as assigned by the exceptional children’s department
 
  1. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentially of information about students as is expected of licensed teachers.
 
  1. Utilizes Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) training, in order to respond effectively to behavior difficulties, while balancing the responsibilities of care.
 
  1. May be asked to substitute as a school crossing guard.
 
  1. Performs such other tasks as the teacher or other supervisor may assign.
 

Terms of Employment:

Ten-month year; work schedule determined by the Principal. 

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to physically perform the basic operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, hearing and repetitive motion. The ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds and a maximum of 40 pounds.

Evaluation:

Evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
