Description

Summary

A Seasonal Operations Worker plays a vital role in the Champaign Park District's seasonal projects and maintenance initiatives. This position’s responsibilities will span a variety of tasks, including mowing, trimming, trash removal, basic maintenance, amenity installation/repair, and cleaning of outdoor facilities. With a focus on seasonal needs, you will contribute to the repair and maintenance of athletic fields and assist in various maintenance repairs on Park District facilities, vehicles, and equipment. Join our team to ensure the optimal condition of outdoor spaces and facilities throughout the seasonal periods. 


Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Acquire and maintain a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment as per established procedures.

Supervision

The Seasonal Operations Worker will report to the Grounds Supervisor and the Maintenance Supervisor. They may also receive daily tasks from any full-time staff as assigned by their supervisors. 


Classification

  • Non-Exempt, hourly 
  • Seasonal (not to exceed six(6) months) 

Training – Can be obtained through the Champaign Park District

  • First Aid, AED, and CPR Certification 
  • Heads Up Concussion training 
  • Mandated reporter training 
  • Harassment prevention training 
  • Bloodborne pathogen training 
  • Drivers training and test 
  • Facility training 

Essential Functions

  • Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District’s policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times. 
  • Utilize District tools in accordance with safety guidelines. 
  • Make minor repairs as assigned and perform unskilled maintenance repairs as needed. 
  • Install sod, prepare grass seeding, edge curbs and walks using a power edger. 
  • Operate tractors, attachments, mowers, string trimmers, edgers, gas and electric-powered hedge trimmers, rototillers, and various hand tools. 
  • Remove trash from District areas and clean outdoor facilities. 
  • Perform maintenance work in skilled areas such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, vehicle and equipment repair, welding, painting, electrical work, pool maintenance, HVAC equipment operation, and custodial. 
  • Work outdoors during varied seasonal conditions, performing tasks such as filling holes, dragging and lining diamonds and fields, installing and removing fencing, removing water, drying fields after rain, measuring and marking athletic fields, and mowing specified areas. 
  • Inspect facilities, equipment, vehicles, and grounds, reporting violations to the supervisor. 
  • Inform the public about ordinance violations when necessary. 
  • Be available to work additional hours upon request, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Check equipment and supplies, reporting necessary repairs to the supervisor. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles assigned to the athletic field crew, as required by the Supervisor. 
  • Comply with equal opportunity and harassment laws, policies and procedures. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Physical Considerations 

The activities required to fulfill the duties of this position are significantly physical in nature, these actives may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Kneeling
    • To plant trees and install landscape timbers. Many other duties 
  • Lifting
    • Up to 701bs alone and over 701bs with assistance 
  • Forearms
    • Operation of chainsaws, hand pruners, shovel work, cultivators, hand tools, string trimmers, power hedge trimmers and edger. Lift and manipulate lumber, landscape timers, and 55-gallon garbage cans.
  • Handwork
    • Shovel work and use of a wide range of hand tools all requiring gripping and controlling motions that are often repetitious.
  • Twisting
    • Most examples listed above and other duties.
  • Push/Pull
    • Raking, moving equipment, installing implements to tractors and other duties. 

The above examples of activities and work are not all inclusive but are intended as an indication of the level and type of endeavors necessary to fulfill the duties of this position. 


Environmental Considerations 

  • Work activity may occur in outside weather conditions including extremes of heat, cold, wet, and dry and may also occur on rough or inclined terrain 
  • Any one of these endeavors may occur for an entire workday or for several workdays in a row 
  • Safety while performing all duties is an important concern 
  • Teamwork and mechanical assists for heavy lifting (over 70lbs) is a department policy.
