Position Summary:

Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice position to learn the necessary skills to earn an apprenticeship certificate of completion from the US Department of Labor and provide a skilled trade professional for the company.

Requirements:

  • Log 2000 hour of on the job learning each year to gain the necessary skills to advance to the next level of the apprenticeship
  • Complete 144 /- hours of formal training annually outside of at GRCC (Grand Rapids Community College) with a "C" letter grade or higher
  • Maintain written log book of skills worked on and learned that is validated by the mentor regularly
  • Work side by side a Maintenance mentor for hands on learning and to ensure safe procedures are learned to work with presses, welders, robots, and other industrial machinery throughout the plant

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Strong mathematical ability to measure and covert numerical data to improve processes
  • Mechanical reasoning skills to assess equipment and understand how it functions
  • Knowledge of tool room safety and proper handling of equipment
  • Ability to take direction from multiple mentors and absorb constructive criticism from others
  • Ability to read gauges and measurement devices used to verify dimensions of parts
  • Ability to learn robot interface technology
  • Learn different welding and fabrication techniques to maintain equipment readiness
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Able to lift 60 pounds and carry across distances of more than 100 feet
  • Running grinders, mills, welders, drill presses, cranes, hilos and other industrial equipment
  • Working on and around high voltage equipment and hardware in a de-energized state
  • Work with technical devices for reading and measuring electricity
  • Work with gages and instruments to troubleshoot mechanical issues within machines
  • Work with hydraulic and pneumatics systems

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Some college or technical/trade school

OTHER DUTIES

Work with an assigned mentor on existing and future projects, for any and all mechanical devices throughout the plant as needed for the job. Learn the proper use of all tools and equipment and where necessary become licensed on equipment. Follow all safety rules set forth by Federal, State, and Local jurisdictions. Diligently adhere to the use of all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Maintain a high level of work and school attendance. Seek academic help immediately if you feel you are struggling or falling behind in a class. Demonstrate throughout each phase of the apprenticeship that you have learned all the required skills to the satisfaction of your mentor and classroom instructors. Maintain a reliable means of transportation to attend both work and classroom obligations. Keep up a strong communication pattern with your mentor, manager, instructors and training coordinator to ensure everyone is aware of your status and progress in the program.
