Ceva Animal Health is Hiring an Animal Services Technician I Near Kansas, KS

Animal Services Technician I
Location: Lenexa, KS

Job Summary and Purpose:

Work to provide animal husbandry, care and technical assistance for the departments of Animal Services, Quality Control, and Innovation and Development. Provide support for quality control testing, innovation and development trials for involving vaccine development.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

1. Daily animal care and record keeping.

  • Monitor and maintain environment, feed, and water supply of test animals.
  • Daily observation evaluating of health status of animals, monitoring for sickness or mortality.
  • Apply appropriate animal identification.
  • Monitor and clean air filters, prepare and change as needed.
  • Accurate and timely recording of data (temperature, humidity, pressures, etc.) of animal containment areas daily and other pertinent forms/supporting documents
  • Comply with specific procedures and regulations in order to maintain bio-security and bio-containment in the animal facilities.
  • Comply with USDA regulations in 9 CFR 113

2. Animal containment facilities.

  • Decontaminate, clean, and disinfect the animal isolators and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and concurrent records of cleaning procedures and other pertinent documents/forms.
  • Prepare disinfectant solutions used in cleaning and bio-security procedures.
  • Keep facilities supplies stocked, organized and maintain equipment records.
  • Notify management and maintenance department of issues with equipment.
  • Set up animal containment areas for the next animal trial/test.
  • Maintain bio-security/bio-containment procedures, equipment, and footbaths throughout the animal facilities.

3. Technical support for QC and I&D.

  • Assist and/or perform the movement, tagging, restraint, and treatment of test animals.
  • Assist and/or perform inoculation of animals for QC and I&D tests.
  • Assist and/or perform drawing blood samples from test animals.
  • Assist and/or perform administration of live challenges to test animals.
  • Assist with animal necropsies, disposal, disinfection, and record keeping.
  • Assist and/or perform humane euthanasia procedures at the termination of tests in accordance with AVMA guidelines.
  • Disposes of test animals in accordance with operating, protocol, or bio-security procedures.
  • Assist and/or perform QC inventory counts.
  • Perform beak trimming
  • Perform basic animal vaccine techniques.

4. Adhere to company safety and policies.

  • Wear appropriate PPE for each job function.
  • Participate in assigned HSE training.
  • Promote a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Read and comply with department and company SOP’s.

Technical / Functional Competencies:

  • Ability to observations and maintain concurrent records
  • Understanding of State and Federal animal regulations
  • Basic understanding of USDA regulations
  • Knows proper restrain animals for bleeding, vaccination, and challenge techniques
  • Ability to perform basic techniques of animal tagging and beak trimming
  • Ability to perform basic departmental vaccination techniques
  • Autoclave and Hotsey power washer operation and other equipment
  • Basic data entry and computer skills
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and individual setting.

Qualifications:

Education – High School Diploma or GED

Work Experience – Previous experience in animal care and husbandry preferred, especially with poultry and/or swine.

Other (consider certifications, specialized knowledge and/or training, etc.) –

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write legibly and communicate in English
  • Visual inspection
  • Stand 90% of shift
  • Lift up to 50 lbs
  • Bending

Working Conditions:

  • Work will be performed in an indoor environment designed for the comfort of animals, as well as outdoor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and individual setting.
  • Bio-security is maintained through multiple showers and clothes changes per day.
  • Exposure to animal or poultry dander, animal waste and odor, and other to potential allergens.
