Degree/Education:

  • Degree: Certificate.
  • Education: Graduate from a formal pharmacy technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) or a formal pharmacy technician program (i.e., technical, hospital, or retail-based program)or a formal medical services training program of the United States Military.
  • Certification: Certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • Experience: One year of experience as a pharmacy technician after graduation.

SPECIALITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of the characteristics of drugs, toxicity, possible adverse reactions, and drug-drug interactions; knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical, and proprietary names of drug) and dosage forms; and knowledge and skill in order to perform computer data entry.

  • Behavior:

  • Be professional, respectful and work as a team. Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with MAMC’s mission, vision, values, and professional standards.

  • Tardiness should be avoided whenever possible.

  • Dress according to MAMC dress code. Wear MAMC-issued scrubs while working in the Inpatient Pharmacy.

Availability:

  • Be available to work all shifts outlined in section 5.4.4.1 following completion of training and competency requirements.

  • Be available to work weekends and holidays.

Job Responsibilities.

  • The contract Pharmacy Technician shall perform essentially the same duties as those required of any Active Duty Military or Government Civil Service Pharmacy Technician of similar experience and in similar duty assignments. The contract Pharmacy technician shall provide services including, but not limited to the following:

  • Receive and review prescriptions using knowledge of pharmaceuticals handled by the pharmacy. Determines medication, dosage form, strength/dosage, and quantity to be dispensed in accordance with accepted practice and pharmacy SOP. Enters prescriptions into outpatient computer system, reviewing profile for allergies, drug/drug or drug/food interactions, and duplicate orders. Obtains the pharmaceutical, prepares package labels, and sets up for pharmacist review. Coordinates with prescriber or other hospital staff on any pertinent issues or questions concerning the medication or patient. Works independently on unit dose carts, sterile products, stockage for point-of-use cabinets, and bulk drug orders for medication use areas following the rules, policies, and procedures as an intermediate step of the medication use process.

  • Receive, review, prepare, and fill physician orders for intravenous solutions, other parenteral medication and nutrition products, unit dose orders, prescriptions, and bulk drug orders. Ensure strict adherence to sterile procedures and correct operation and maintenance of equipment. Advises pharmacist of any significant issues or problems connected with the specific medication.

  • As an inpatient pharmacy technician, prepare a full range of sterile products, following existing guidance and regulations and under the supervision of the pharmacist/technician supervisors. Calculate quantities required to prepare unit doses, pre-pack, Pyxis refill/deliveries, restock requests, returns, and follow up on the daily check-off list to make sure that all daily tasks are done before the end of the shift.

  • Complete the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician, criteria-based competency assessment within 90-120 days.

  • Perform the full range of compounding for the pharmacy to include intravenous and chemotherapy preparations in support of hematology and oncology services. Prepare bulk compounds, as needed, for which master formula cards or specific instructions from a pharmacist are available.

  • Establish and maintain files for a variety of manual and automated records concerning pharmacy operations. These include prescription and patient records, stock and inventory records, as well as miscellaneous administrative files.

  • Independently monitor pharmaceutical inventory. Receive incoming stock, checks for discrepancies, and rotates stock for the full range of medication and supplies, including controlled substances. Assist in conducting medication storage area inspections to assure adequate pharmaceutical supplies. Use knowledge of pharmaceuticals in order to perform duties in pharmacy functional areas, including knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical, and proprietary names of drug) and dosage forms. Assist in conducting medication storage area inspections/liaison visits. Inform supervisor about stock level changes as determined by unusual increases or decreases in demand and seasonal requirements.

  • Select components; compute quantities; set up, operate, and maintain common and specialized instruments and equipment; and performs mixing and blending of pharmaceutical substances.

  • Review orders for compatibility and additives, converts instructions to proper units and measures, and calculates the quantity of solution required based on concentration, interaction, dosage, number of doses, loss in processing, etc.

  • Package and label products and ensure they are properly handled, stored, and accounted for. If authorized by the Department of Pharmacy, may perform final pharmacy check on bulk drug order and/or replenishment of unit dose medication carts issued to medication use areas within the facility in accordance with local policy.

  • Prepare additives in strict compliance with procedures and proper sterile techniques. Observes preparation process and brings to the attention of the pharmacist any unusual or unanticipated situations or results.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and in accordance with this PWS

Staffing and Scheduling:

The schedule or scheduling process is as follows:

  • Work is primarily at Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC). The duty schedule is as set forth in the spreadsheet that will be provided for each month by the Government.

  • Typical work shifts:

  • Inpatient shifts are 365/7 days a week and includes all holidays.

Shifts of Sunday to Sunday will be 0500 – 1330, 0700 – 1530, 1100 –

1930, 1300 – 2130, and 1500 - 2330; 2300- 0730

(Saturday and Sunday shift is a rotation)

  • Typical work shifts and staffing requirements may be subject to change based on mission requirements.

  • The COR or their designee will be responsible for communicating with the contractor regarding scheduling issues. The shift supervisor may act as point of contact after normal duty hours, weekends and holidays. In such cases, the COR shall confirm all actions on the next normal working day.

  • For any shift exceeding six hours, the contractor's employees shall be entitled to one thirty minute break. This break shall be non-chargeable to the government for compensation. Example: for a shift of 0700 to 1530 compensation for pay purposes would be eight hours, with one thirty minute break.

  • Absences and leave:

  • The contractor shall notify the COR when a scheduled contract personnel cannot fill a shift due to illness or emergency. Notification shall be as early as possible, but no later than 2 hours prior to start of scheduled shift.

  • The contractor shall have sufficient qualified personnel available so that all services are provided in the event a contract personnel scheduled to work becomes ill, resigns, is terminated, or is otherwise unavailable to work. The proposed substitutes shall have at least the minimum qualifications required for the position.

  • When the contractor cannot fill a position, the contractor shall notify the COR.

  • Scheduled absences of contract personnel shall be coordinated with the COR at least 30 calendar days in advance. Depending on how the hours are specified will determine whether or not the contractor supplies a substitute. The Contractor will only be paid for hours actually worked.
