POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Positions in this title series provide professional psychological services to individuals residing and receiving services in New York State-operated, certified, or licensed programs and facilities under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or other appropriate licensed clinician.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate as a member of the Psychology Department. This includes attending meetings and performing special assignments, as directed, such as assisting with committee functions or teaching specialized courses.
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team and attend meetings to develop comprehensive plans to promote independence.
  • Provide psychological services to individuals who have developmental disabilities such as but not limited to:
  • Perform psychological assessments such as intelligence testing, adaptive behavior, functional behavioral assessments, risk assessments, assessments of capacity, substantial diminution.
  • Prepare and present individualized plans to various review committees (Human Rights Committee, Informed Consent Committee) to seek approval for restrictive interventions.
  • Develop treatment plans (i.e., behavior support plans) to reduce challenging behaviors and increase replacement behaviors/coping skills.
  • Train staff regarding individual and general strategies
  • to decrease challenging behaviors and increase prosocial behaviors.
  • Review and analyze data; develop progress notes.
  • Provide individual and group counseling.
  • Review psychotropic medications with the psychiatrist and complete consults prior to each psychiatric visit.
  • Conduct any other duties related to psychology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

For Psychologist Trainee 1 - a master's degree in psychology from a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education/United States Secretary of Education. The psychology degree program must have been one that prepared graduates for positions treating individuals in clinical, forensic, community mental health, or school settings;

OR

Completion of graduate coursework in a qualifying doctoral level program in psychology that would be the equivalent required for conferral of a master's degree in psychology. The coursework must have prepared graduates for positions treating individuals in clinical, forensic, community mental health, or school settings. Candidates must submit an official transcript to provide evidence that such coursework was completed, or an attestation of the coursework equivalency from a qualifying accredited college or university.

For Psychologist 1 and 2 - you must have a Master of Psychology degree from a regionally accredited college or university psychology degree program which prepares graduates for clinical positions in the field of psychology in a clinical, forensic, community mental health, or school setting. Qualifying degree programs must have included coursework in psychological and behavioral assessment, and treatment modalities for psychological and behavioral disorders;

AND

For Psychologist 1 - you must also have two years of supervised post master's degree experience in a clinical, forensic, community mental health, or school setting, where your primary duties were providing psychological services as described below.

For Psychologist 2 - you must also have three years of supervised post master's degree experience in a clinical, forensic, community mental health, or school setting, where your primary duties were providing psychological services as described below.

Substitution for Post-master’s degree experience:

Doctoral degree in a clinical field of psychology may be substituted for both the education and experience requirements above.

Clinical psychology practicum, externship, or fieldwork assignment, that was completed as part of a qualifying Master of Psychology degree program, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Certificate of advanced study in a clinical field of psychology or school psychology may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Note: Examples of qualifying degree programs/majors include but are not limited to the following: clinical psychology, clinical forensic psychology, community psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, and child psychology.

Note: Examples of non-qualifying degree programs/majors include but are not limited to the following: education, counseling, clinical counseling, clinical hypnosis, community counseling, educational counseling, forensic counseling, guidance counseling, human relations, marriage and family counseling, professional counseling, rehabilitative counseling, school counseling, student and personnel services, mental health counseling, psychological counseling, pastoral psychology, transpersonal psychology, neuroscience, experimental psychology, industrial psychology, and organizational psychology.

*Note: Examples of qualifying experience is considered to be direct experience with individuals, families, or groups in a hospital, psychiatric hospital, psychiatric clinic, community mental health clinic, correctional facility, intermediate care facility, institutional or school setting, or community based residential and/or day program, under the supervision of a doctoral level psychologist, licensed psychologist, licensed physician, licensed psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or licensed clinical social worker (or in the case of school psychologists with permanent certification from the New York State Education Department, working under the supervision of a school principal or similar administrator). In order for experience to be considered qualifying, primary duties must have included activities such as administering assessments and tests for diagnostic psychological evaluations or completing functional behavior assessments; developing behavior support plans or writing psychological treatment plans; and/or providing psychological counseling and treatment in one or more of the following areas: mental and/or emotional disorders, cognitive disorders, behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, alcoholism, addictions, substance abuse disorders, sex offender assessment and treatment, or forensic mental health.

Note: Examples of non-qualifying experience include but are not limited to, experience in experimental psychology, research psychology, industrial psychology, organizational psychology, health psychology, utilization review, guidance counseling, pastoral counseling, or as a habilitation specialist or instructor of psychology.

A practicum, externship, or clinical fieldwork assignment is defined as a direct clinical experience providing psychological services in a hospital, psychiatric hospital, psychiatric clinic, community mental health clinic, correctional facility, intermediate care facility, institutional or school setting, or community based residential and/or day program; and must have been a component of a qualifying Master of Psychology degree program listed on the official transcript.

Appointments may also be made at the Psychology Trainee 1 levels. Candidates hired at the entry-level title (Psychology Trainee 1) may be advanced to the full-performance level (Psychologist 1) following satisfactory completion of two-years of service.

For Associate Psychologist - Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a field of psychology; AND have completed a one-year, full-time clinical internship, or traineeship; OR one year of psychology experience in a clinical setting under the supervision of a Licensed Psychologist. Candidates must demonstrate on their application how they meet this qualification.

Notes:

1. Non-qualifying degrees include, but are not limited to the following: education, educational psychology, educational counseling, guidance counseling, experimental psychology, industrial psychology, organizational psychology, student and personnel services, mental health counseling, human relations, etc.

2. Psychology experience in a clinical setting is considered to be any direct care experience with individuals, families, or groups in a hospital, clinic, private practice, or correctional setting under the supervision of a Licensed Psychologist. Qualifying experience must primarily include performing psychological evaluations or assessment tests, psychological diagnostic testing, developing psychological treatment plans, providing psychological counseling and treatment in one or more of the following areas: mental and/or emotional disorders, intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, alcoholism, addictions, sex offender assessment and treatment, or forensic mental health.

3. The following experience is NOT considered qualifying: experience in administration, administrative services, administrative oversight, training, special education, behavior specialist, habilitation specialist, project management, research, or primarily supervisory experience. Other non-qualifying experience including, but is no limited to, experience in experimental psychology, research psychology, industrial psychology, organizational psychology, utilization review, guidance counseling, etc.

For Licensed Psychologist - Candidates must be licensed and currently registered by New York State as a Licensed Psychologist.
