Job Description

Working as a full-time nursing instructor at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) can be both rewarding and challenging. Here's a description of what the role might entail:

  • Teaching Responsibilities: As a nursing instructor, your primary responsibility is to teach nursing courses to students enrolled in CNM's nursing programs. This involves preparing and delivering lectures, leading discussions, conducting lab sessions, and supervising clinical experiences.
  • Curriculum Development: You may be involved in developing and updating the curriculum for nursing courses to ensure that it aligns with industry standards and best practices in nursing education. This could include incorporating new teaching methods, technologies, and evidence-based practices into the curriculum.
  • Assessment and Evaluation: You'll assess students' progress through assignments, exams, and clinical evaluations. Providing constructive feedback to help students improve their skills and knowledge is essential. Additionally, you may participate in program evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the nursing curriculum and identify areas for improvement.

This involves guiding students in applying their theoretical knowledge to real-life patient care scenarios, ensuring they develop clinical competence and professionalism.
  • Advising and Mentoring: You'll serve as an academic advisor to nursing students, assisting them with course selection, academic planning, and career guidance. Mentoring students, particularly those facing challenges, can help them succeed academically and professionally.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Nursing is a profession that requires a high degree of empathy and compassion. Patients often experience fear, pain, and uncertainty, and nurses who demonstrate empathy and compassion can provide comfort and support during challenging times. Nursing instructors nurture these qualities in their students, helping them understand the importance of connecting with patients on an emotional level while maintaining professionalism and boundaries.
  • Professional Development: Staying current with developments in nursing education and the healthcare industry is crucial. You may attend conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs to enhance your teaching skills and stay updated on advancements in nursing practice.
  • Collaboration and Service: Nursing instructors often collaborate with colleagues within the nursing department and across other disciplines. Engaging in service activities such as committee work, accreditation processes, and community outreach helps contribute to the overall mission of CNM and the nursing program.
