Central Kentucky Riding for Hope is Hiring a Part-Time PATH CTRI Near Lexington, KY

Central Kentucky Riding for Hope is looking for a part-time CTRI to meet the growing demands of our therapeutic riding program!

Overview:

Responsible for teaching lessons as needed throughout the week (M/T/W/TH/F/S/S) while ensuring the safety of riders, volunteers, staff, and other participants of the program. Maintain a cooperative working relationship with other staff, volunteers, and participants. Assists with CKRH events and activities as available.

Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the following documentation for all activities under your supervision: equine usage, participant/student attendance, instructor lesson plans and all other documentation required for center to maintain PATH Premier Accreditation.
  • Develop goals for each participant taught based on input from parents, therapists, and other appropriate venues and implement these goals through session objectives and content.
  • Record lesson and term objectives and progress through measurable means and summarize progress at session end.
  • Communicate with families regarding goals, objectives and other routine matters.
  • Maintain PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) certification, including required continuing education.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Maintain competence with completion of basic mounting, dismounting and emergency procedures.
  • Instruct as a substitute as needed.
  • Act as the certified PATH Intl. instructor during sessions such as; equine assisted growth and learning sessions, horsemanship activities (such as STABLES and EAST programs, for example).
  • Teaching adapted intermediate equestrian lessons
  • Schooling & conditioning program horses

A CTRI should be able to perform the following tasks:

  • Conduct an effective, safe and basic equestrian lesson to individuals with disabilities
  • Instruct basic ring figures and arena patterns
  • Create lesson plans and notes following the lesson
  • Set participant goals
  • Manage volunteers
  • Identify basic horse body language and communication
  • Manage equine behavior within a lesson setting
  • Groom and tack an equine in preferred discipline
  • Properly fit equipment to equine and participant
  • Manage basic behavioral issues with equines and riders
  • Identify and correct basic student and equine issues during a lesson
  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., emergency dismounts, basic horse first aid issues)
  • Mount and dismount non-ambulatory individuals with disabilities (e.g., wheelchair mount/dismount with or without a lift)

A CTRI must maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, and coordinate with equine, other instructors and staff in order to:

  • Match horses and equipment to riders
  • Adapt tack to meet complex needs
  • Identifying form and function blemishes in equines
  • Manage complex or severe behavioral issues with equines and riders
  • Identifying areas for improvement within lessons
  • Identify and correct complex student and equine issues during a lesson

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Manage volunteers directly involved in sessions taught to ensure safe, quality sessions.
  • Participate in volunteer trainings as available. New employees must attend one orientation at onset of employment
  • Participate in volunteer recognition activities.

Horse Care and Facilities Responsibilities

  • Ensure that assigned program horses are suitable, brought in and prepared for use in scheduled sessions. Report to Equine Care Manager when changes need to occur.
  • Ensure that equipment is properly pulled, applied, and fitted to program horses assigned to lessons prior to lesson start. Report to Program manager when repair or changes need to occur.
  • Per PATH Intl. CTRI job description; all instructors, whether full or part-time, will fit equine for their lessons with appropriate tack for their riders and equine from the program tack room should available items on the master tack list not meet rider or equine needs.
  • Ensure that equipment is properly removed and stored after lessons.
  • Ensure that horses are properly cared for after lessons.
  • Maintain equipment, tack and facilities in a manner that protects and preserves the quality of each.
  • Participate in the daily care, cleaning, and organization of the facility.

General Responsibilities

  • Adhere to standards and procedures as outlined by CKRH.
  • Adhere to PATH, Intl. standards and guidelines.
  • Attend instructor meetings.
  • Participate in special events (Night of the Stars, Tack Sale, 5K, etc) as able.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Central Kentucky Riding for Hope.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED; PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI), at minimum.

Experience and Knowledge: Recommended six months experience (in any capacity) with a therapeutic riding facility. General knowledge and experience with horses/horse care.

Skills and Abilities: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. rarely, up to 20 lbs. occasionally and perform physical labor for duration of lesson period. Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a valid resident/work permit and maintain a current Kentucky State driver’s license.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 25 per week
