CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The CDC Office of the General Counsel is the legal team for HHS, providing representation and legal advice on a wide range of national issues. OGC supports the development and implementation of HHS's programs by providing legal services to the Secretary of HHS and the organization's various agencies and divisions.

Research Project: The overall objective of this project is to provide legal training through an organizational component of the General Counsel (OGC) and under the general supervision of a Deputy General Counsel or Research Project Senior Attorney and the close guidance and direction of a staff attorney. The incumbent must hold a bachelor's degree and have completed at least two years of study towards the first legal degree. 

Learning Objectives: The student/trainee is assigned matters that further his/her legal training as follows: legal research of a complex nature with clear guidelines provided on questions arising from statues administered by the Department; drafting proposed opinions of individual cases, claims or other legal matters; assisting in the preparation of documents following guidelines and instructions; reviewing State and Federal legislative proposals and identifying impact on Departmental programs; participating in the investigation and preparation of cases, as specifically assigned. All student/trainee efforts are reviewed by a Deputy General Counsel and/or Reviewing Staff Attorney for guidance and skill development.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 3, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will be for 12 weeks and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
