The Technical Director oversees and coordinates stage operations at the Hinman and Moe Auditoriums, as well as the Visual Art Center outdoor stage of the Arts Bonita Performing and Visual Arts Centers. This role demands skilled leadership, coordination, and collaboration with both professional and non-professional personnel. The Technical Director is responsible for making recommendations on equipment improvements and staying abreast of industry standards of excellence.

  • Operate lights, sound, projection or other live technical elements during concerts, theatrical and dance performances, or other live events.
  • Lead all technical elements for live events, including planning, production-related budgeting, load-in, hang and focus, builds, technical rehearsal, strike, and venue transitions.
  • Oversee the planning, evaluation, scheduling, implementation, engineering, and supervision of all technical elements involved in the Arts Bonita events and rentals. 
  • Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates. 
  • Manage inventories of all stage equipment, such as pianos, lights, sound systems, and properties, ensuring proper procurement, repair oversight or execution, usage, and documented storage. Inventory records should be formatted for sharing with external associates.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to review, negotiate, and approve technical contract riders.
  • Conduct timely Advance Calls to performers, managers, or facility users to assess their technical requirements.
  • Arrange the rental/purchase, delivery, return, and payment of additional equipment needs, such as audio-video and lighting equipment, while promoting the use of Arts Bonita equipment and backline among artists and musicians.
  • Secure independent contractors or volunteers or operate a light board during performances as necessary.
  • Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management as necessary.
  • Maintain the industry standards for safety for Arts Bonita staff and renters in the facility. 
  • Design or collaborate with Lighting Designers to execute lighting plots for various events and classes, including hanging, circuiting, focusing, and gelling.
  • Manage sound needs for events, plan and supervise setups and sound checks, and operate the soundboard when required.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and schedule part-time over-hire sound, lighting, and general technicians, ensuring the appropriate balance of skills and talent for each event and processing timely payroll for them.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and schedule volunteers to assist as needed, maintaining updated lists of both.
  • Assist patron services/volunteers and box office supervisors in operational planning and implementation, ensuring hospitality as per contracts and facilitating merchandise sales.
  • Submit payment requests for independent contractors, technicians, etc.
  • Maintain a roster of stagehands, sound, and lighting overhires.
  • Supervise and maintain technical areas, including the Scene Shop.
