Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The position of Communications Specialist with the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) is one of moderate to considerable responsibility. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for CORE’s social media platforms, website content, media relations, writing and developing key publications as well as gather stories and photos/video that document the mission and vision of CORE and its employees. This position may also take on duties relating to development as well as becoming involved with other department projects and events as necessary. They will work to ensure that all programs, activities, and events demonstrate internal and external support for CORE’s mission and image as well as monitor and measure CORE’s public image. They will have the ability to develop, implement and deliver communication tools that target CORE’s audiences, positively predispose the public to CORE’s key messages and result in increased awareness and consent. They will be responsible for tracking metrics related to said job responsibilities.

Excellent/advanced oral and written communication skills are required, as is the ability to meet deadlines, understand, track and maintain budgets and goals and objectives of the department. They will have the ability to travel throughout CORE’s service area including Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New York, and work weekends and evenings. They must be able to demonstrate organizational skills, effective use of time/project management and ability to meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal skills are required to work with diverse audiences, including volunteers, community partners, students, transplant recipients, transplant candidates and donor families. A commitment to CORE’s mission and ability to represent the organization in a positive manner will lend itself to the ability to fulfill the requirements of the position.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Communications Specialist reports directly to CORE’s Director of Public Affairs and Donor Family Services. They will manage and curate content for all CORE’s social media platforms. Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy to engage and educate the public on organ, tissue, and eye donation. Ability to produce live social media content at community events. Ready and willing to monitor media and social channels after hours and on weekends, including posting when necessary.

Proactively pitch stories to promote CORE and support the life-saving mission. Respond to media requests in a timely manner. Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets to secure coverage for stories, campaigns, and events. Prepare press releases, media kits and other materials to facilitate media engagement.

Monitor traditional and social media trends and analytics to enhance communication effectiveness. Establish relationships/networks of industry professionals or influencers on social media. Using data analytic tools, monitor, track, audit, and assess the effectiveness of traditional and social media efforts, report out on analytics, and recommend content optimization strategies.

Help curate, write, edit and coordinate production of CORE’s publications and communications tools through development of strategic annual editorial plan. Collaborate with IT Department to manage CORE website to ensure content is current, accurate and provides an excellent user experience. Support the graphic design, 

photography, writing and editing needs of the Community Outreach Department for newsletters, website, special events, infographics, and other materials. Collaborate with outside agencies to innovate and execute marketing campaigns and strategic initiatives.

The candidate may be assigned other job-related functions by the Director of Public Affairs and Donor Family Services, and/or CORE’s President/CEO, such as receiving, investigating, and tracking complaints and issues from the public and other audiences, developing communications measurements and/or other related activities within the department. They will work closely with the Director of Public Affairs and Donor Family Services to establish budgets and work within budgetary guidelines. They will work closely with the Director of Public Affairs and Donor Family Services, other members of the Community Outreach department, and contribute as a member of CORE’s team. They will demonstrate support of donation and CORE’s mission.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

The position of Communications Specialist requires that the incumbent have a bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or other related field, minimum two years’ experience in communications, or public relations preferably with content writing and editing and health care background. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, incumbent must have a minimum of five years’ experience in communications, public relations, marketing or other relevant field. Excellent/advanced written and oral communications skills as well as project management experience are highly desirable. They should demonstrate strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Requires demonstrated proficiency in: Microsoft Office, Content Management Software, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite - specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere. Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to lift 30 lbs., carry and set up displays, sit/stand for long periods of time and be available for some overnight stays of related CORE business. They must be willing to travel throughout the service area and be available for some evening and weekend work. They must demonstrate a commitment to CORE’s mission and administrative philosophy, a strong work ethic and a commitment to the overall organ, tissue, and cornea donation program.
