Job Description

Associate General Counsel - Advocacy Salary: $90,000 - $95,0000 Job Description The Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York (CIDNY) is the leading organization serving and representing people with disabilities in New York City. CIDNY's mission is the removal of barriers to the full integration of people with disabilities. CIDNY helps people with disabilities gain the skills and services they need to live independently in the community. CIDNY advocates for fair and effective policies that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Position Summary: CIDNY seeks an admitted attorney with at least two to five years of legal experience in the fields of disability and contract law. The Associate General Counsel will be a member of the management team and will report to the Executive Director. The Associate General Counsel will assist with various meaningful tasks inherent to building the in-house legal department for an award-winning non-profit social justice and human services agency. Responsibilities: ● Oversee the personnel for the advocacy goals. ● Review, revise, and draft a wide variety of contracts and commercial leases under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Board of CIDNY. ● Assist in developing, drafting, maintaining, and communicating agency policies, such as in human resources/employment laws, compliance, security, and workplace safety. ● Develop, organize, and maintain databases related to legal, compliance, and risk management matters related to lawsuits, leases, contracts, certificates of insurance, and contractual requirements. ● Oversee and conduct defense against litigation and claims by notifying carriers, conducting interviews, reviewing documents, assembling discovery responses, drafting legal pleadings, participating in depositions and negotiations, and ensuring timely response to all applicable deadlines. ● Conduct legal research regarding relevant legal topics as needed, such as in the areas of employment law, disability-related law, contract, lease, and intellectual property, as well as regarding a wide variety of compliance issues, ranging from New York City building code regulations to Medicaid and HIPAA. ● Oversee certain risk management functions, including helping to establish insurance criteria, policies, and procedures regarding vendors and consultants and day-to-day management of the certificate of insurance program. ● Review and respond to subpoenas from law enforcement and other city agencies. ● Develop, communicate, and enforce systems and policies to increase efficiency and controls in the contracting process. ● Provide staff training program goals, duties, and expectations to the agency. ● Meet weekly with the Executive Director for supervision. ● Meet monthly with all Program Directors for an exchange of ideas. ● Submit monthly reports to supervisor and funding source. ● Collaborate with the Executive Director and Manager of Development & Fundraising to identify foundation funding opportunities, prepare grant proposals, and participate in appeals to donors. ● Assist in the management and organization of CIDNY's strategic plan. ● Participate in the identification of government contract opportunities and in the preparation of responses for these grant applications. ● Assist in the development of materials that will appeal to donors interested in advocacy and policy. ● Work with the Executive Director and Contract Manager to ensure grant and contract compliance and timely reporting of project activities and outcomes. ● Prepare accurate reports on a timely basis. ● Provide timely and accurate generation of publications such as issue briefs, fact sheets, testimony, newsletter articles, advocacy alerts, and an annual advocacy agenda. ● Participating in leadership team meetings, planning, projects, and agency policy development. ● Complete other assigned tasks requested by the Executive Director. Qualifications: Must possess a fierce dedication to the civil rights of individuals with disabilities. Must have excellent communication skills as there is frequent communication between state and local government officials, legislatures, advocacy groups, the community, and other organizations committed to full Civil Rights, Integration, and Individual Rights of individuals with disabilities. Superb writing skills are necessary for this reason as well. Great public speaking skills are critical. Must be organized and good at multitasking. A good understanding of policy-making procedures and can read and understand government writings. Computer literacy is necessary for the office functions of this position. Some travel may be needed, but CIDNY pays all expenses. Education and Experience: ● Must have graduated from an accredited law school and be a member in good standing of the New York State Bar. ● At least two years of relevant legal experience, such as in-house or government practice or practice in employment, disability-related, corporate, real
