Center For Family Life in Sunset Park is Hiring an Employment Counselor - Bilingual English/Spanish and/or French Near Brooklyn, NY

Description

Center for Family Life in Sunset Park is a neighborhood-based social service agency offering a comprehensive range of services to children and adults while contributing to community building. The services include family counseling, adult and youth employment services, emergency food, and extensive social, educational, and recreational programming at various local schools. 

The Adult Employment Program is an open admissions job readiness program that assists unemployed and underemployed participants with their search for work. The services include job readiness preparation, assessment, and referrals according to participants' needs. The Adult Employment Program is currently looking for a Bilingual English/Spanish and/or English/French speaking Employment Counselor to provide employment counseling and transitional service assistance to support refugees and asylees participants and their families in achieving economic and social self-sufficiency.

Working with a low-income population facing complex challenges, the role of the Employment Counselor will include providing employment preparation services, case management, service coordination, and follow-up services to ensure job retention. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to 

  • Conducting intake interviews to assess applicants’ eligibility for the program as well as completing an application for services and a Family Self Sufficiency Plan 
  • Assessment of employability and occupational directions through the gathering of background information, and interviewing for interests, skills, and/or barriers to reaching employment goals 
  • Work with participants to complete resumes, cover letters and provide job interview preparation 
  • Conducting job readiness workshops on various topics including skills assessments, resume writing, interviewing skills, using technology for job search, and Worker’s Rights 
  • Assisting participants with online applications, setting up interviews, and reviewing outcomes of interviews 
  • Assess family’s needs and provide appropriate referrals or directly assist with benefit applications as needed 
  • Maintain ongoing communication with participants providing supportive services to clients by continuous assessment of needs, information about resources, and job orders with a potential match to the client’s interests 
  • Work closely with Job Developer to identify potential interview opportunities 
  • Advocacy with prospective employers when needed 
  • Provide retention services to participants for a minimum of one-year post-placement, facilitating second and third job placements as needed 
  • Maintaining case records with all required forms, and completing all paperwork in a timely and accurate manner 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree or some college with relevant experience preferred 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and/or French required 
  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse population including newly arrived refugees and asylees 
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines 
  • Experience with employment counseling, case management, and group work, highly desired 
  • Superior organizational, interpersonal, time management, and communication skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

VI. WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Work in an office setting; considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer 
  • May attend various meetings with different personnel and supervisors 
  • Some travel throughout Brooklyn, New York is required to meet with clients

This is a full-time position at 35 hours per week, salary is $43,000 to $45,000 yearly.
