Center for Developmentally Disabled (CDD) is a private, not-for-profit corporation founded in 1972 serving adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities within the greater Kansas City, MO area. CDD provides residential care services, employment services, day habilitation to adults, and a private school for students who are referred through the Kansas City Missouri area.

Summary/Objective
Community Networking and individual skill development is a vital part of PALS (People Actively Living Socially) University. PALS U focuses on helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop and enhance independent living skills, using a curriculum designed to support their choice of daily activities and access to the greater community. These services are primarily individualized but may occasional be in a group setting. All services are provided in the community or at the individuals home.
The PALS University Community Lead (CL) facilitates service delivery by providing instruction, modeling desired skills and behaviors, assisting with problem-solving, and adapting planned activities and method of engagement as needed to individual’s needs and circumstances. PALS CL will also support new PALS U Aides in developing relationships with new clients. Due to the nature of this program, there will be a significant amount of time in community-based instruction. The PALS CL will work in conjunction with and under the direction of the PALS U Specialist to assist with the development, implementation, documentation, and evaluation of each individual’s personal outcomes as outlined in their Person-Centered Service Plan.
Essential Functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
  • Assists with implementation of activities and lesson plans based on each individual goals;
  • Assists with planning of offsite activities.
  • Provides assistance with personal care as needed;
  • Completes shift notes and other required documentation during each shift worked;
  • Monitors individuals' Person-Centered Support Plans to ensure accurate implementation, on-going progress, and timely and accurate required documentation;
  • Completes necessary documentation needed for the Annual Person-Centered Plan packets;
  • Supervises and monitors individuals in taking medications and obtaining medical treatment for illness or injuries;
  • Maintains a “designated” driving status;
  • Transports to and from and supports individuals during community outings;
  • Attends scheduled meetings, pre-service and in-service training, and complete certification training as scheduled;
  • Writes and submits Event Reports;
  • Performs accurate time and attendance procedures by clocking in and out of shifts as required;
  • Provides companionship, emotional support, behavioral crisis intervention, and behavioral counseling to individuals.
Competencies
  • Ability to plan, prepare and execute lesson plans, curriculum modules, planned activities, etc.;
  • Capable of focusing on the activity that is being presented and the individuals that are engaged in the activity, spending minimal time and effort redirecting disruptive individuals;
  • Ability to track progress of PALS U participants and make recommendations to PALS U Specialist.
  • Ability to train and assist new PALS U Aides.
  • Ability to communicate schedule changes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to communicate in a team environment.
  • Possesses basic computer skills;
  • Can read, write, comprehend, and speak English;
  • Ability to pass medication administration, first aid and CPR certification;
  • Understands and follows universal precautions;
  • Demonstrates empathy and a person-centered approach to service delivery;
  • Can adapt communication styles based on the needs of the individual;
  • Willing to learn and train on the job and open to learning new skills;
  • Maintains effective working relationships with supervisor, peers, guardians, and service coordinators;
  • Ability to pass chauffeur’s license test.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibility
Work Environment
This job operates in a day program setting and will require exposure to human elements (such as blood, urine, etc.). Work occurs at the facility as well as in the community. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, climb, or bend. The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Also requires stepping up into commercial passenger vans.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 3:30pm. However due to the nature of the individualized services, there will be times that additional hours including evenings and weekends may be required.
Travel
Driving throughout the metropolitan area daily or as needed
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma/GED
Preferred Education and Experience
One year of related experience
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Must have valid driver’s license and car insurance and be able to drive and transport individuals in own vehicle, as well in agency van.
