Cedar Rapids Community School District is Hiring a School Nurse (0.8 FTE) Near Rapids, IA

POSITION OVERVIEW:
School nursing is a specialized practice of nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement and health of students. The school nurse’s role is to support student learning by serving as the school’s health professional and as an advocate for the individual student. The school nurse relies on student-centered, evidence-based practice and performance data to inform care.
ENDORSEMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
BS or BA undergraduate degree with relevant nursing experience as a Registered Nurse will also be considered 
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing
Requires Statement of Professional Recognition from the Board of Educational Examiners before commencement of the position. 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Duties must be performed on site. Other duties or tasks may be assigned.
  • Adheres to all District, State and Iowa Board of Nursing rules and regulations and practices consistent with the School Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Coordinates health services for students at assigned building(s). Position may rotate between schools.
  • Assesses student health concerns, writes and implements Individual Health Plans, Emergency Plans, Evacuation Plans, contributes to student 504 plans, coordinates and ensures the delivery of school health services in assigned building(s).
  • Functions as an active member of a multidisciplinary team to provide health expertise in planning and evaluating support services for students
  • Provides case management and care coordination
  • Manages health office activities, including oversight of Health Secretary responsibilities. 
  • Delegates to, trains, and supervises unlicensed personnel performing health procedures. Ensures compliance with district procedures and protocols.
  • Provides anticipatory guidance and health education that emphasizes self-care, wellness activities, personal health practices, and appropriate use of health resources
  • Provides health counseling and guidance to students and their families
  • Provides consultation services including home and community visits
  • Initiates and or coordinates referrals to and/or linkages with health agencies
  • Collaborates with others in the school and surrounding community to improve students' health
  • Works effectively with others to minimize environmental risk factors and promote health and safety within the school setting
  • Assists staff with strategies to support and meet students’ needs and achievement of academic goals.
  • Uses active communication and motivational interviewing skills to build positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues and community members.
  • Assists in planning and delivery of social/emotional/behavioral school-wide screening, education and follow up. 
  • Maintains appropriate records, documents according to health services procedures.
  • Protects the confidentiality of data.
  • Provides individual and group education to support student development of health literacy skills.
  • Provides BBP training to identified staff with Occupational Exposure.
  • Leads and manages the building emergency medical responders.
  • Meets the Standards of School Nursing Practice and the Iowa Teaching Standards on a consistent basis, including participation in observation, co-planning, and performance review activities.
  • Participates in nurse’s PLC’s, member of the building Tier team(s) and other school or district teams/groups as needed.
  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

EDUCATION and or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, or BS or BA degree with relevant nursing experience 
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
  • Previous pediatric nursing, school health nursing, or community health nursing experience highly desirable.
 
In addition, the specific skills/educational qualifications for this include:

  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and implement ideas contained in technical documents, assessment data, professional journals and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively write reports and communications to students, colleagues, parents and staff.
  • Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, staff and students. 
 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals and fractions. 
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to solve problems effectively using sound nursing judgement.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. 
  • Ability to work under moderate to high levels of stress. 
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 - 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes. 
  • The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The noise level in the work environment varies, but typically not beyond normal voice level. 
  • The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday.
  • The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom building including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. 
  • The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but may work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
