JOB SUMMARY

This position is a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team that provides direct care to psychiatric patients working under the direction of a crisis nurse. The primary focus is completing intakes for voluntary individuals and engaging patients and providing a safe treatment milieu.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Operations Administrator, the Milieu Specialist completes the intake process for admissions (voluntary) and provides basic care to patients including: technical monitoring, taking vital signs and physical care. Orients patients to treatment setting and assists with activities of daily living as needed. Reviews and participates in implementation of the patient treatment plan. Makes rounds and monitors patients activities, physical and mental status and reports to nursing staff. Checks patient belongings for contraband to ensure safety for the person while in treatment at CBI. Conducts a variety of patient safety monitoring activities such as observational checks. Documents observations, interventions, and group activities in the patient medical record while maintaining confidentiality of all health information.

Assists in maintaining a safe, orderly & therapeutic environment. Maintains patient safety and protects patient rights through observation and reporting patient behaviors, communications, interactions and physical status. Recognizes patients who are behaving aggressively, acting as a danger to themselves or others, or are in a crisis or medical emergency situation. Provides intervention including, but not limited to, de-escalation techniques, redirecting of patient and/or participating in restraint or seclusion as needed per policy.

Assesses and interacts therapeutically with patients and families. Provides treatment that promotes

patient dignity, independence, individuality, strengths, privacy, and choice. Demonstrates respect for

cultural diversity and patient boundaries. Plans and facilitates social and didactic group activities. May participate in other rehabilitation and treatment programs.

Provides quality patient care by maintaining knowledge and skill level related to the symptoms and

treatment of behavioral disorders relevant to position responsibilities and in accordance with state

agency regulations. Maintains knowledge to identify types of medications commonly prescribed for

patient group and the common side effects and adverse reactions of the medications.

Assists in the admission, discharge and transfer process of patients and completes required documentation in the patient medical record.

Each discipline is governed by specific policy and process. It is the responsibility of the employee to read, and learn the associated policy and processes as they will be held responsible for carrying out their duties in a competent and ethical manner.

· Adheres to a “No wrong door” policy and does not deny services to any individual without first consulting a Program Manager and Director.

· Ensures all documentation is completed prior to the end of shift.

· Completes all significant and incident reports prior to end of shift

· Protects each patient’s confidentiality within the guidelines of established policy and procedure.

· Adheres to establish policy and procedures set forth by CBI.

· Will complete all medical records errors within their next shift

· Ensures that all patients are treated with dignity and respect at all times.

· All other duties as assigned by supervisory or administrative designees.

Skills Necessary to Perform Assigned Tasks and ongoing performance that each individual will be measured against in addition to those noted above:

· Reading & Comprehension: Must have the ability to read and comprehend information without difficulty.

· Documentation: As evidenced by all work being completed by the end of scheduled shift and in adherence with A.A.C., the ADHS/DBHS Provider Manual, and Community Bridges established documentation standards in process and policy.

· Typing Skills: This position requires the specialist to type 30/wpm.

· Computer Skills: Familiar with Microsoft systems such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

· Linguistic Ability: Demonstrates the ability to coherently communicate with others.

· Foreign Language: Not required for this position but is helpful and is strongly encourage.

· Analytical: Demonstrates an ability to synthesize complex information and report it to others in a calm and precise manner.

· Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

· Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of costumers or employees of organizations.

· Interpersonal Relations: Works well with others and can be depended upon to follow through with task completion, and be available to assist.

· Chain of Command: Follows the established chain of command and does not create situations that would call into question the authority of supervisor or impede their ability to manage the facility or program.

· Ethics: Adheres to a principle of “Do no Harm” by demonstrating personal integrity in interactions with staff, patients, and public. This is also demonstrated by one’s ability to perform assigned duties in a competent manner without the violation of Community Bridges policies/processes, patient and/or employee rights, or violation of State, Federal, or local laws.

· Agility: Able to move around quickly and freely in response to crisis situations.

· Physical Abilities: Must be able to move and/or lift a minimum of 150lbs. Has the ability to assist patients with self- care needs such as bathing and getting up from ground and walking.

· Quality: Performs work neatly and completely. All work is completed within the time allowed for task per policy.

· Customer Service: Ensures that community stakeholders (police, fire, probation, businesses, clergy, insurance companies, providers, RBHA’s, concerned citizens, etc.) are treated with the utmost respect and assisted to the best of our ability in each case. Never saying “no” but always assisting each request within the context of the agency mission and purpose. Is evidenced by not receiving a community complaint or excelling in the area of customer service.

· Patient Care: The extent to which the employee promotes empathy, warmth, understanding, and treats each patient with respect and dignity always keeping in mind their cultural, psychological, medical, social, and humanistic needs.

· Assessment & Triage: Assessments are accurate as to the patient’s presenting issue while respecting the individual’s cultural, psychological, social, and medical status. Assessments are conducted within the timeframe and context identified in policy and process and is appropriate in their use for developing a plan of action for the seamless transition to the next appropriate level of care.

· Patient Care Planning: The extent that the designated (treatment, continuing care, health & wellness, discharge) plan developed by the employee is in conjunction with the goals of the patient as well as those areas identified in his or her associated assessment that require attention.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

High School diploma or equivalent and a proficiency level typically achieved with 4 years of direct

patient care in a behavioral health setting. Position requires the skills and ability to monitor and assist in maintaining a therapeutic milieu.

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, CREDENTIALS, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current AZ Driver’s License
  • CPR/First Aid
  • CPI Certification, Upon Hire
  • BLS Certification, Upon Hire

OTHER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Able to interact with people experiencing a behavioral health crisis
  • Able to interface with members of a multidisciplinary team and provide timely information regarding patient behaviors and symptoms
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of mental illness and associated symptomatology.
  • Able to pass waive testing requirements to take vital signs and other waived tests.
  • Must have compassion and understand basic tenets of recovery
  • Able to demonstrate basic computer skills, including: use of EMR, Outlook, and Word.
  • Able to work as a team with other professionals and to carry out responsibilities with supervision
  • Able to follow CBI Chain of Command

COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE OF POSITION

Able to understand and interface with people experiencing a behavioral health crisis and participate in a multidisciplinary treatment team approach to care. Provides patient safety and non-clinical care to patients of CBI. Must be able to multitask and maintain positive working relationships with other CBI team members, patients, and their families. Applies knowledge and skills to assist in problem solving to ensure a safe treatment milieu under the direction of a registered nurse.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to pass background check
  • Able to move around quickly and freely in response to crisis situations
  • Able to work after hours, weekends and holidays when member requires services
  • Must be able to move and/or lift a minimum of 150 pounds
  • Able to drive to multiple locations upon notice or need without restriction.
  • Must be able to complete daily documentation of interaction with staff no later than 24 hours after interaction
