Cayuga Medical Center is Hiring a Physical Therapist - Outpatient - Full Time, Days Near Ithaca, NY

Job Title: Outpatient Physical Therapist

Department: Physical Therapy

Reports To: Director, Physical Therapy

Job Summary: This is a professional position which includes responsibilities for assessing patient's physical, psychological, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs, as well as planning and providing physical therapy treatments for patients in accordance with written prescription or referral from a physician, or as appropriate for direct access patients. Other responsibilities include instruction and education of physical therapy and physical therapy assistant students. Physical Therapist also provides education to the community. Does related work as required. We provide advanced training for PTs in our ABPTRFE-accredited Orthopedic Residency and Spine Fellowship programs; staff are encouraged to attend these for free to continue their learning

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying patient's goals and needs. Provides quality care by assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining physical therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription.
  • Administers manual therapy (joint and soft tissue mobilizations, deep tissue massage); instructing, encouraging, and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as therapeutic exercises, ambulatory functional activities, daily-living activities, and in using assistive and supportive devices, such as crutches, walkers, and orthotics to help patients accomplish their treatment goals.
  • Administers physical therapy modalities such as mechanical traction, hot/cold packs, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation for pain control, neuromuscular re-education, and functional improvements;
  • Evaluates effects of physical therapy treatments and fit of orthotic devices by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications.
  • Completes discharge planning by consulting with the patient, family and care givers, and physicians.
  • Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing home exercise programs; instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending outpatient programs.
  • Documents patient care services and charges by charting in patient's electronic medical record.
  • Supervising treatments given by aides, technicians, and assistants.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending continuing education workshops and in-services; and reviewing professional journals.
  • Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.

Requirements:

  1. Current CPR Certification
  1. Strong oral and written communication skills
  1. Ability to assess situations and make decision
  1. Must complete yearly mandatory safety in-services and/or trainings
  1. Must complete yearly Healthstream e-Learning Courses
  1. Must adhere to patient safety "Red Rules" and infection prevention policies

Education: successful completion of accredited physical therapy program; may be Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate level program

Experience: preferred

Licensure: Current NYS Physical Therapy license

Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to move/lift patients with assistance
  1. Ability to provide manual therapy to patients including joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations, and deep tissue massage
  1. Ability to move a 45# weight for patient use

Schedule: Clinic hours M-Th 7a-6p; F 7a-4p; Therapists have different schedules within these hours. Position includes on-call at Main campus inpatient unit on weekends (currently 3-4 per year per PT).
