Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

Department: Surgical Short Stay Unit

Position Status: Full Time, 36 hours per week

Schedule: 3x12s or 4x10s, night shift

RN to Patient Ratio: 1:5

Position Summary: Licensed Practical Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center are an integral part of the collaborative interdisciplinary team devoted to the delivery of comprehensive and compassionate care to the Tompkins County community. LPNs are able to practice at their full scope of practice, and have the opportunity to engage in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services with the goal of improving patient outcomes, and execute an optimal plan of care in a shared governance environment.

Location: Cayuga Medical Center Main Campus - Ithaca, NY

Department Specific: The Behavioral Services Unit offers the opportunity to work with a variety of patient acuity levels, and with a diverse population of patients. Orientation is up to 3 months long, is tailored to the individual needs of the employee, and includes Crisis Intervention Training and TRU Facilitation courses. Employees are welcomed into a supportive and collaborative interdisciplinary team, in a shared governance environment. Employees are also offered an array of opportunities within the department such as charge, participation in developmental projects and access to a plethora of organizational resources for continuing education.

Essential Functions:

1) Ability to communicate in a clear and respectful manner with both patients and co-workers.

2) Dispenses medication within scope of practice and accurately documents in patients EMR.

3) Obtaining data related to patient care and recording accurately in the patients EMR.

4) Reports abnormal findings or changes in mental, and emotional conditions of the patient to the RN. Examples include changes in vital signs, abnormal weight gain or loss, increase in pain, etc....

5) Responds promptly to call bells and patient needs.

6) Correctly supports and reinforces teaching done by the RN.

7) Reports data collected for plan of care adjustments to be approved by RN.

8) Appropriately stocks all areas of the department, including the unit and participates in unit PI as instructed.

9) Knows how to appropriately perform physical care within licensure scope of practice.

10) Appropriately and collaboratively works with hospital aides to prevent harm to patients while under care of LPN.

Requirements:

  • License: Active New York Nursing license, out of state nurses are still eligible to apply
  • Minimum education: completion of an accredited LPN program
  • Experience: preferred, but not expected
  • Certifications: BLS (new hires have the opportunity to obtain these certifications during introductory period)
  • Physical: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
  • Mental: Emotional Stability and organizational skills necessary to meet the demands of a stressful environment and emergencies.Good interpersonal skills to interact in appropriate manner with varying personalities, relating to patients, peers, supervisors, physicians, other hospital staff, and outside agencies.
