Cayuga Medical Center is Hiring a Lead Medical Technologist - Full Time, Days Near Ithaca, NY

Job Title: Lead Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Supervisor or Manager

Job Summary:

A Lead Medical Technologist is a highly skilled health professional who performs all the duties of a Medical Technologist with additional technical responsibilities, personnel management and regulatory oversight.

Job Responsibilities include:

  1. Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, and report appropriately according to protocol. Assigns proficiency test samples, ensuring all staff participate and demonstrate acceptable results. Investigates results that are not in acceptable limits. *
  2. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot complex equipment. *
  3. Acts as technologist in charge when supervisor, manager or technical director is not available. Assigns daily benches if needed, and provides day-to-day supervisor and monitoring of moderate and high complexity testing. Participates in laboratory interviews and assists in the selection of and training/competency of employees. *
  4. Utilize complex information systems; collect and interpret data. Performs instrument validation/methods verification for new tests/platforms and write or revises procedures as needed. *
  5. Perform and interpret quality control, and monitor quality control and instrument functions. Takes corrective action as needed and validates new lot and controls, submits peer data. *
  6. Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards, and infection control and safety guidelines. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies. *
  7. Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others. Hears and helps to resolve complaints from staff and providers. *
  8. Maintain adequate inventory and conserves resources. Places orders for supplies and reagents when necessary. *
  9. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  10. Is flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned.

*= Essential functions

Physical Demands: May require light lifting and carrying, including boxes, equipment, stooping and kneeling, maybe required to lift up to 30 pounds. Repetitive use of hands (eg. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able physically to operate automation used in the job.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent) and Registered as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.

Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Scientist

Experience: Four years of prior laboratory experience is preferred.

Additional Qualifications: Good written and oral communication skills preferred. Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes. Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred.
