Cayuga Medical Center is Hiring an ED Technician - Part Time Days/Evenings Near Ithaca, NY

Job Description

Department: Emergency Department

Job Title: ED Technician

Reports To: Nurse Manager

Job Summary: The ED Technician is a key member of the patient care team. The ED Technician is responsible for working closely with the nurse to provide excellent direct patient care. This person supports activities of assessment, testing, and diagnosis of patient presenting to the emergency department, and helps prevent complications. Strong interpersonal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to interact with people from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. This position requires the ability to positively interact with behavioral health patients, and work in a restricted environment. Previous patient care experience is a plus.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Communicating in a clear and respectful fashion with both patients and teammates with every encounter. Representing CMC with the highest level of customer service. Acting as a resource for the interdisciplinary team.
  2. Reporting abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions of the patient to RN. Examples include changes in vital signs, acts of daily living (ADLs), patient ambulation and/or transfers, and daily weights.
  3. Obtaining and reporting vital signs as scheduled and prn in a timely manner.
  4. Assisting patients with all aspects of personal care (including bowel and bladder care, ambulating, and repositioning).
  5. Supporting safe patient ambulation and fall prevention in the department
  6. Assisting patients with maintaining a clean and organized bedside area to ensure a safe workspace that is conducive to healing.
  7. Remaining flexible in assisting both patients and teammates as needed.
  8. Intentional rounding on patients every hour to ensure their needs are met.
  9. Perform 12 lead EKG on patients as ordered by providers
  1. Performs proper venipuncture and post care of phlebotomy site along with labeling each specimen with 2 forms of ID with zero labeling errors.
  1. Bedside retrieval and safe processing/transport of instruments to sterile processing
  2. Safely transporting patients by stretcher or wheelchair outside the department for testing or admission
  3. Performing direct observation and safety monitoring of patients assessed to be a threat to others, themselves, or ongoing medical interventions
  4. Perform ordered POC testing in accordance with competencies
  5. Stock patient rooms & medical equipment carts with supplies according to established pars throughout the department as directed

Requirements:

  • Education: =/>18 years of age, GED or HS diploma
  • Experience: Previous patient care experience is a plus
  • Licensure: NA
  • Certifications: Will obtain BLS during introductory period,
  • Physical Requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.
