Bertha’s Place (62 units) and Bertha’s Place Too (29 units), are non-congregate shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

The populations served are single women, couples with a female head of household, and people over 55. Bertha’s Place shelters are secure access 24-hour / 7-day a week low barrier shelters with the primary goal of helping support program participants regain permanent housing.

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for the janitorial needs as well as preventive maintenance and repairs for Bertha’s Place and Bertha’s Too.

Building Maintenance Technician coordinates with program generalists to ensure common areas are cleaned, garbage is taken out, resident rooms receive a health and safety check once a week that includes changing sheets and linens.

Building Maintenance Technician schedules repairs and inspections; independently perform minor plumbing, carpentry and HVAC tasks, maintain inventory and building records.

Responsibilities

Building and Grounds

Employee accomplishes this responsibility by completing the following task :

  • Perform, minor plumbing and carpentry repairs and maintenance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance checks and troubleshoot with HVAC vendor on any ongoing problems with HVAC system. Make sure quarterly maintenance is carried out by HVAC vendor
  • Oversee boilers and make sure temperatures are at appropriate levels
  • Schedule fire sprinkler and fire extinguisher inspections with current vendor.
  • Work with kitchen supervisor on kitchen equipment needs.
  • Work with current vendor for twice yearly roof inspections.
  • Maintain inventory of power equipment and shop tools.
  • Maintain safe work areas while performing scheduled maintenance and repairs.
  • Prepare reports that meet safety guidelines to insure full compliance with safety codes and practices.
  • Maintain safety in the building, keeping buildings clean and orderly according to building codes and safety regulations.
  • Participants in Safety Committee for Bertha’s Place and Bertha’s Too make sure to comply with all safety measures and attend safety committee meetings on a regular basis.
  • Inspect and turn over units as needed and upon openings, work with staff to conduct screenings for hazardous substances in units.
  • In coordination with the Operations Assistant, track all repair needs and follow up tasks.
  • Perform monthly building inspections. Work with Facilities Supervisor to take care of issues that need to be addressed.
  • Keep grounds free of debris, including dumpsite and recycling area, maintain parking lot and handicap striping and signage.

Power-wash area around compactor daily.

  • Clean and maintain area where carts are stored.
  • Keep smoking area clean.
  • Make sure filters are changed for washing machines and dryers and that any necessary repairs are carried out.
  • General painting and repairs to interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Maintain lighting, replacement of fixtures and bulbs around the buildings.
  • Maintain kitchen’s equipment to include oven, stove, freezer and appliances to meet safety inspections and codes.
  • Assist with maintenance and repairs not covered by contracted vendors.
  • Make sure the annual Maintenance Plan / Schedule is fully complete.
  • Assist the Program Manager in keeping the annual Maintenance Plan / Schedule updated.

Office Repairs and Moves

Employee accomplishes this responsibility by completing the following tasks

  • Coordinate office moves with Program Manager.
  • Keep records on all projects and repairs using the provided computer software system
  • Follow work order system to insure repairs and moves are completed in a timely manner

Purchasing Recommendations and Inventory

Employee accomplishes this responsibility by completing the following task :

  • Coordinate purchasing needs with Program Manager.
  • Prepare purchase orders for approval.
  • Maintain good record keeping

Miscellaneous Responsibilities

Employee accomplishes this responsibility by completing the following task :

  • Work with facilities staff as a team.
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Manager.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Experience in building repairs, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting.
  • Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds.
  • Must be capable of operating commercial grade janitorial equipment, shop and power tools.
  • Reliable transportation and valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Ability to develop and maintain records of service.
  • Ability to relate to a wide range of socio-economic, racial and cultural backgrounds.
  • Support and contribute to a creative, collaborative and respectful environment that promotes teamwork.
  • Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multi-cultural situations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with a diverse population in a residential environment.
  • Experience in customer relations (internal and external).
