Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Boston is Hiring a Direct Care St Patrick's Women's Shelter Near Somerville, MA

The Direct Care worker is responsible for the supervision, safety and security of the guests of the shelter including the delivery of a variety of services, which attend to the physical and emotional well-being of the guests. The Direct Care worker must be alert and prepared to answer phone calls, greet guests and visitors and respond to emergency situations quickly and appropriately while maintaining professional boundaries. The Direct Care work is a member of a team providing caring and compassionate support to homeless individuals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Always maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Always represent self as a caring and responsible role model. 

Maintain the philosophy of Catholic Charities to provide service to those in need and to promote justice.

Follow the policies and rules for the shelter.

Advocate for the safety and health needs of the guests. Ensure safety and well-being of all guests.

Ensure the cleanliness of the facility and the security of the shelter and agency property.

Prepare meals as listed on daily prep list, serving of daily breakfast or dinner per shift coverage.

Complete guest intakes on any new guests entering the shelter during shift coverage.

Provide crisis counseling to guests and determining their needs.

Provide crisis intervention during guest disputes, enforcing rules and barring procedures.

Offer guests appropriate information and referrals to area services.

Provide guests with personal hygiene products, over the counter medications, emergency clothing as requested.

Record shift activities and guest information in the shelter log.

Interact with business associates in a professional manner.

Report maintenance requests for repairs to the Program Director as the need arises.

Communicate with the Program Director to ensure the needs of the guests are met daily.

Work holidays that occur during normally scheduled work days. 

Work is performed in a building that houses an emergency overnight shelter and transitional housing program. Daily interaction with staff, the general public, community and homeless individuals that may involve behavioral issues of individuals managing addiction and mental health matters. Use of computers, phones and kitchen appliances as needed. Keen attention to the needs of others; good listening skills.

May require periodic local travel. 

Attendance at internal and external meetings.

Other responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field preferred.

A minimum of 1 year of prior experience working with homeless individuals or a combination of internship and work experience as related to homeless population and shelter work. Experience in Social Services or related field preferred

Prior training and knowledge of substance abuse and mental health issues.

Must understand and maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Demonstrated ability to work with a varied and occasionally difficult client population. 

Ability to work well as team with others.

Must possess ability to complete daily program documents.

Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with attention to detail. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook. Teams and Zoom.

Current CPR and First Aid certification, required to update as needed.

Must be able to physically respond to situations quickly.

Must be able to push, pull, bend and lift to 25 pounds.
