Description

Summary Description

The Manager of Train Operations will lead and work with the Train Crews to meet all switching timelines, and operational goals and ensure quality and efficiency. The responsibilities will include but are not limited to, providing daily switching instructions, conducting operational testing, daily safety/job briefings, recording each testing event and briefing in SafeTack, ensure rule and FRA Regulations compliance. This position will communicate with the GM of Rail Services regularly to provide operational information such as car volume, track conditions, safety concerns, KPI, rule violations, Incidents, and Injuries. Other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of the daily operations including Safety, Environmental, Efficiency, and Compliance.
  • Ensure Switching goals are met, a safe environment is achieved, and a profit is realized to return value to our shareholders.
  • Recommends measures to improve switching methods, performance, and safety. Suggest changes in working conditions to increase efficiency.
  • Oversee and coordinate all switching activities.
  • Respond to customer and crew emails and phone calls during and after work hours.
  • Report any operational obstacles to the Regional/GM of Rail Services.
  • Prepare reports and enter records in SafeTrack as required for FRA Compliance.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the crews are following Railroad rules and FRA Regulations. Implement and enforce company-wide initiatives, policies, and practices; interpret and communicate company policies to the Crews.
  • Ensure that crews are signing on and off duty in SafeTrack HOS Program. This is an FRA requirement.
  • Perform required Operational Testing and Safety Briefings and record in SafeTrack.
  • Ensure safety practices are being followed at all times and be involved in actively improving safety culture and mindset.
  • Coordinate with the Regional/General Manager of Rail Services and Recruiting, to fill staffing needs. Notify the Regional/General Manager and HR when Disciplinary actions are needed.
  • Utilization of hands-on leadership to facilitate growth among the team, including assisting with the training of new employees.
  • Ensure the crew adheres to FRA/Railroad/Cathcart Rules, Regulations, and Standards.
  • Communicate regularly with the Regional/General Manager of Rail Services to ensure goals are met.
  • Ensure safe operation and movement of locomotives and railcars and other railroad equipment, in compliance with FRA, AAR, and Cathcart rules and regulations.
  • Coaching, managing, and providing directions to Train Crews.
  • Provide Crews with proper PPE and tools required.
  • Assist with Incident and Injury Investigations and Reporting Process.
  • Fill in as Engineer or Conductor when needed.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications


  • Degree and/or Certifications applicable to position or equivalent experience
  • 2 years experience in management/supervisory role in the rail industry.
  • Conductor/Engineer experience required
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of management.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate strategies into operational objectives and projects.
  • Strong analytical skills, self-motivated with excellent teamwork.
  • Goal-oriented and a strong customer service attitude.
  • Effective use of standard office computer technology such as databases, word processing, ERP and reporting systems.
  • Strong knowledge of train operation procedures and work practices.
  • Knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and Railroad rules.
  • Required ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
