CataBoom is seeking a creative and experienced HTML5 game developer to design and develop our next-generation game development and deployment framework, and to design and develop new interactive game mechanics. The selected candidate will join our growing team of developers in a highly collaborative environment, leading the development and maintenance of game mechanics used in our SaaS-based gamification platform, creating interactive experiences that are viewed millions of times around the world.

As lead game designer and developer, you work closely with our design, product management, and product development teams to create elegant, usable, responsive, and interactive game experiences for use across multiple devices. You collaborate with other team members to leverage the diverse disciplines of the team, to learn and understand the unique requirements of other team members, and to teach and mentor others regarding your requirements and skill set. 

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be instrumental in the identification, evaluation and selection of software tools and libraries that will best serve as the core building blocks for our next-generation game development framework and deployment engine. You will work with other development team members to implement the framework and deployment engine elements to meet business and platform requirements.

With the new framework in place, your work will focus on concepting, designing, and developing new game mechanics for use with our gamification platform, as well as migrating and enhancing select game mechanics from our existing library using the new framework. Support and maintenance of CataBoom’s game mechanic library will be among your ongoing responsibilities. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Design, construct, and build interactive game mechanics using HTML5/JavaScript/Canvas for cross-browser use on desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Troubleshoot and debug legacy and new code to optimize performance and usability
  • Gather and evaluate user feedback to continuously deliver a better user experience
  • Support continuous improvement by investigating alternatives and new technologies
  • Identify design challenges and collaboratively devise optimal solutions to address them
  • Assess and recommend improvements to existing code base and architecture
  • Promote usability best practices
  • Write clean, modular, and well-documented code that is easy to maintain.
  • Create game specifications and operating instructions.

Required skills

As lead game designer and developer, you possess an arsenal of skills and experiences that enable you to perform your role well. Qualified candidates have 3 or more years of proven work experience as a game and interactive developer and are comfortable functioning as team lead. 

In addition, you should have the following programming & development skills and experience:

  • Experience developing with HTML5 Canvas /JavaScript
  • Experience using HTML5 animation/interactive libraries (CreateJS, PixiJS, ImpactJS)
  • Experience with game development frameworks (Phaser, GDevelop, Cocos, Construct)
  • Debugging and code optimization
  • Proficiency working with Git code repositories and Docker containers
  • Cross-browser and cross-device design, development, debug, and verification testing

If you have the following skills and experience, they will be a plus:

  • Strong artistic and graphic design skills.
  • Game development design and development experience
  • CI/CD implementation experience
  • Knowledge and experience implementing gamification concepts
  • Experience with game physics
  • Audio design and editing for animation

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (English)

  • Strong attention to detail to deliver high quality work
  • Analytical thinking and robust problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team and also independently to achieve established goals.

  • Bachelor's degree (preferred) or equivalent experience in related field (required)
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in software development
