JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Medical Assistant Location: Carbondale/New Castle

Date: 3-18-2022 Pay Range: $18.00 - $22.00

Job Summary

To provide a welcoming environment for the patient and their family throughout their experience at CVCC. Assists physician and patients by measuring vitals signs and performing lab tests to greeting patients and scheduling appointments. In a typical day on the job, you’ll fill a variety of clinical and administrative roles. Medical assistants are crucial members of a successful visit.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

A. Customer Service

1. Smile, greet patients and perform check-in process.

2. Maintain patient confidentiality, in accordance with HIPPA regulations, always.

3. Always maintain a professional demeanor with patients, families, vendors, and staff.

4. Talking to others to convey information effectively.

5. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

6. Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

B. Duties

1. Complete HIPPA training.

2. Demonstrate basic computer and keyboard skills.

3. Prepare patient for visit by directing and/ or accompanying patients to the examining room.

4. Verifies patient information by interviewing patients; reviewing and/ or recording medical history; taking and recording vital sign in EHR; confirming purpose of visit or treatment by documenting with appropriate template in EHR.

5. Assisting provider by arranging instruments, supplies, and equipment for treatment.

6. Educates patient by providing medication, immunizations, and home care instructions, answering questions.

7. Process specimens in clinic and/ or to be sent to outside laboratory.

8. Following the providers order by administer and properly record immunizations.

9. Supports patient care delivery by helping healthcare provides during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing medical instruments and equipment; preparing send out of sterilization.

10. Recognize and respond to emergencies.

11. Keeps medical and office supplies ready by checking stock; anticipating needs; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipts and stocking items.

12. Keeps medical and office equipment operating by following operating instructions and established procedures; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.

13. Sterilizing and stock exam rooms.

14. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy patient care environment by adhering to organization standards and policies, and to legal regulations, alerting others regarding potential concerns.

15. Improves medical assisting and medical job knowledge by attending training sessions; reading technical publications; recertification as needed.

16. Obtain/maintain CPR certification.

17. Contributes to medical assisting and medical office success by welcoming related, different, and new requests; helping others accomplish job results.

18. Gathering blood for patients lead at one year well cares and sending out to lab information sheet with blood sheet.

19. Knowing what insurance/self-pay/ discount cards get specific vaccines from private or VFC.

20. Administer medications; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies; drawing blood and collecting specimens.

21. Communicating with provider to generate further medical assistance for patient; initiating referral process; scheduling, following up, and completing referral.

22. Convey patient’s laboratory tests and results to provider.

23. Gathering and document patients medical and social history.

24. Communicating and documenting lab results to provider and patient.

25. Demonstrate use of Microsoft Outlook for company use only.

26. Communicate effectively through phone, patient portal, fax, and internal data system.

27. Provide administrative support, including but not limited to scheduling, rescheduling, or canceling appointment(s) for new and established patients. Answering multiple telephone lines, transferring calls, completing recalls, call backs to patient, and processing medical record requests.

28. Knowledge of preferred patient provider relationship.

29. Ability to call and confirm or make appointments.

30. Implement and understand recall system.

31. Comfort patients by anticipating patient needs, answering questions, and asking for assistance when needed.

32. Knowledgeable of insurance companies and health insurance cards.

33. Keep patient appointments on schedule by notifying Provider, through EMR and communicating verbally, by timing the patient in once check in process is complete.

34. Recognize schedule changes throughout the shift.

35. Knowledge of allowed areas of the EMR and the ability to systematically take, record, and pass on messages.

36. Knowledge of the EMR tabs within the patient chart and where records are placed.

37. Efficiently uses scanner to place record in patient chart.

38. Complete back office to do log, daily

39. Participate in quality improvement meetings bi-weekly.

40. Participate in medical assistant meetings once a month.

41. Aware of quality improvement processes and activities in the clinic.

42. Maintain operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.

43. Maintain orderly medical assistant office, responding to emergencies.

44. Sanitize commonly used surfaces throughout the shift.

45. Will be cross trained for front office and assist when needed.

46. Capable of working independently.

47. Perform duties or projects as determined by supervisor.

Job Qualifications

A. Education or Formal Training and Experience

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. Minimum 1 year experience in medical or financial field preferred.

3. Minimum 1 year experience in customer service capacity.

4. Spanish speaking preferred

B. Knowledge, Skill and Ability

1. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.

2. Skill in typing and data entry.

3. Skill in phone etiquette and customer service.

4. Ability to work in a professional manner.

5. Ability to establish and maintain courteous working relationships to convey information effectively with patients, staff member, and others.

6. Ability to organize, prioritize and problem solve.

7. Ability to actively look for ways to help people.

C. Physical Requirements and Workplace Environment

1. Requires periods of standing and sitting.

2. Requires ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 35 pounds.

3. Requires sufficient near vision to be able to read documents and computer screen.

4. Requires ability to comprehend both oral and written communication.

5. Requires ability to use routine office equipment such as computer, copy/fax machine, and telephone.

6. Must pass criminal background check.

7. Annual Flu vaccine required.

8. Obtain vaccine records for MMR, Varicella, T-DaP, Hep B, and COVID.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week
