The job of Payroll Specialist is done for the purpose/s of performing a wide variety of District financial activities primarily related to the accurate processing of employee payroll; ensuring the accuracy and compliance of preliminary reports, time sheets, spreadsheets, etc.; assuring accurate program and funds distribution; compiling mandated reports of payroll activities to federal and state agencies; and providing guidance to employees regarding payroll processes.

Administers employee benefit programs in compliance with carrier contracts; assists Payroll Coordinator in providing requested information (e.g. payroll procedures, contract requirements, time sheets, wages paid, benefit eligibility, etc.); assists personnel, beneficiaries, financial institutions, and/or insurance providers (e.g. payroll procedures, contract requirements, time sheets, wages paid, benefit eligibility, etc.); attends meetings, workshops, etc. as requested; distributes payroll and other documents (e.g. open enrollment packets, new/change forms, flyers, identification cards, etc.); maintains employee records in both written and electronic formats (e.g. claim forms, premium schedules, employee records, leave status, enrollment information, eligibility policies, time cards, deduction cards, etc.); monitors payroll processes and a variety of benefit information (e.g. benefit documentation and payroll deductions, leave time, work location, W-4 changes, COBRA eligibility, etc.); orients personnel regarding various procedures and program requirements; performs record keeping and general clerical functions (e.g. statistical summaries, enrollment lists, premium reports, scheduling, payroll reports, transmittals, memos, letters, copying, filing, faxing, etc.); processes employee payroll and benefit information (e.g. time sheets, withholding information, payroll deductions, changes in status, calculating contract balances/pay-to-date status, quarterly reports, W-2s, etc.); researches discrepancies of payroll data (e.g. time sheets, leave time, unemployment eligibility, direct deposit requirements, salary schedule placement status, benefit eligibility, etc.); responds to inquiries regarding a variety of payroll and benefit related issues (e.g. leave status, benefit eligibility, addressing interdepartmental issues, employment verifications, garnishments, child support, etc.).

Job related experience is required. High school diploma or equivalent.

Requirements: Pre-employment proficiency test; Criminal Justice fingerprint/background clearance; Ability to read, write and communicate clearly in English.
