Casa di Mir Montessori School is Hiring an Assistant Teacher - Grades 4-6, Upper Elementary. Starts Aug 2024 Near San Jose, CA

Position Title: Assistant Teacher – Upper Elementary (Grades 4-6)

Compensation: $25 to $30 per hour, Non-Exempt (hourly), Depending on experience & Educational level

Schedule & Starting: 40 hours per week during the school year. Starting August 2024

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Teacher co-creates an environment that is conducive to the growth and development of children in the realization of their fullest learning potential. She or he is responsible for assisting the teacher in the day-to-day teaching and functioning of the class in a combined Montessori class of students in Year 4-6. The Assistant Teacher makes a positive contribution to the character of the school community, helps maintain a respectful and cooperative atmosphere and cooperates in the administration of Casa di Mir’s policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND SKILLS:

  • Carries out plans and directives of the Head teacher.
  • Circulates in classroom in order to assist children with questions or problems, which may include: organization, completion of tasks, and returning materials to shelves.
  • Cultivates and reinforces positive student behavior.
  • Helps keep classroom neat, materials upkept, and organized.
  • Supports classroom management in order to create an environment that allows children to focus.
  • Assists with material preparation and correcting of student work.
  • Supervises students during lunch, recess and bathroom breaks, ensuring that all students are supervised at all times.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly classroom environment
  • Reports observations or concerns about students to the teacher in a confidential manner.
  • Available for questions while teachers are in lessons; protects teachers from interruption while teachers are engaged in lessons.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or the Head of School.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to relate to children and adults with maturity and respect.
  • AA or BA degree in Child Development, Human Growth, Education, or related field.
  • Montessori experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a classroom environment with school age children.
  • Knowledge of classroom management that emphasizes connection, consistency, and compassion.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel and crouch in order to assist children; routinely sit on the floor with children. Walk and stand routinely.
  • Occasionally lift to 30 lbs.
  • Work in a demanding environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Sensory Requirements: this job requires visual and auditory perception and the ability to communicate orally.
