Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is Hiring a Data Scientist/PostDoctoral Associate Near Millbrook, NY

We are seeking a Data Scientist for a research project focused on spatio-temporal dynamics of global change across at the terrestrial-aquatic interface. In addition to publishing synthetic papers, the data scientist will work with a team to create visualizations, and tools that can help bring the science to actionable results and products. We anticipate that the Data Scientist will gain new, international collaborators, develop new skills, and engage in professional development activities (e.g., Global Lake Ecological Observatory (GLEON) and other all hands’ meetings, relevant conferences, student mentoring, educational programs).

This position will be based either at Cary Institute or the Center for Limnology, University of Wisconsin, and be mentored by Kathleen Weathers (Cary Institute) and Paul Hanson (Center for Limnology). Please contact Kathleen or Paul if you have questions about the position.

Duration: This is a Cary Institute, full time, exempt, fully benefitted, salaried position for two years, with possible extension pending funding. Salary for a new Ph.D. is $70,000 per year with highly competitive benefits. The preferred start date is June of 2024.

Location: Cary is in Millbrook, NY, USA, and the Center for Limnology is in Madison, WI; the position has some locational flexibility.

Qualifications: Skills in data science, such as AI/ML analytics as applied to remote sensing data and products, and expertise in ecosystem science, especially aquatic-terrestrial dynamics, are highly desirable. Passion for and experience with collaborating across disciplines, and with a diversity of colleagues, both remotely and in person, essential. Ph.D. in relevant field, or Masters significant experience in data science required. Written and oral communication skills will be essential.
