POSITION OVERVIEW

Carolinas Pathology Group is seeking a full-time Hematopathology Specialist who will be responsible for reviewing and performing differential counts on peripheral blood and bone marrow aspirate/bx for bone marrow cases and assess serum/urine electrophoretic separation for protein and immunofixation electrophoresis. The ideal candidate will have Hematology experience in a diagnostics laboratory and a strong commitment to excellent patient care. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Protein Electrophoresis duties, including serum protein electrophoresis, urine protein electrophoresis, serum/urine immunoelectrophoresis, and reflex studies.
  • Hematology peripheral blood pathology review. 
  • Coagulation mix study, coagulation platelet aggregation, and coagulation factor inhibition study. 
  • Digital imaging of pathology slides, preparation of cases, and follow up tasks for weekly tumor board meetings.
  • Fielding calls/researching requests for clinicians to assist in patient care.
  • Retrieving and directing reports for testing performed at reference laboratories.
  • Acting as a technical resource for clinicians, pathologists, and the clinical laboratory, including teaching abnormal morphology to new hire technologists.
  • Coordinating sample preparation and triaging for testing.
  • Engaging in projects to improve patient care, including but not limited to, bone marrow collection oversight, development and maintenance of bone marrow protocols, development and maintenance of bone marrow requisition, development of system wide proficiency testing for the clinical laboratory and remote slide review for pathology.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biology or Chemistry from an accredited program.
  • Current and active certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or equivalent is required.
  • 2 years of Hematology experience in a diagnostics laboratory, including abnormal cellular morphology is required. 
  • 2 years of experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests is required.
  • 2 years of experience operating laboratory instruments and systems is required. 
  • Highly skilled and friendly communicator to assist customers and colleagues to achieve excellent quality patient care.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft office.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Schedule: Full-time; hours are variable based on staffing to volume.
  • Work Environment: Frequently lift, carry, and/or push/pull items up to 25 pounds; long periods of standing or sitting at a workstation; frequent repetitive motions; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
