Carney, Sandoe & Associates, an educational recruitment firm, is currently seeking a Lower School Guidance Counselor at an independent school in Norfolk, Virginia.

The school is seeking a Lower School Guidance Counselor to provide an on-going, comprehensive, mission-based school counseling program that is preventative in design, developmental in implementation, and supports students in the areas of academic achievement, individual student planning, and personal and social development. The role will serve as a resource for our community including faculty and parents. In this role you will collaborate with all stakeholders to facilitate, deliver, and support student wellness for our PreK - 5th grade students while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

• Work in collaboration with the Lower School Head, School Guidance Counselor, and faculty to develop and support the implementation of the curriculum.
• Lead professional development for faculty and provide parent education and training to members of the community.
• Communicate and collaborate closely with families to coordinate support and to provide resources.
• Develop and maintain relationships with a range of community members, including non-profits, and mental health agencies.
• Work with the Lower School Head, Lower School Academic and Social Coach, and School Guidance Counselor to assist school efforts to skillfully balance learning needs across the student body.
• In collaboration with teaching faculty, support students through one-on-one, small-group and whole group instruction.

Qualification & Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in an applicable area of study such as: psychology, human services, counseling or a closely related field is required;
• Master’s Degree is strongly desired to the extent that it provides specialized training in an applicable area of study related to counseling.
• At least three (3) years of experience is preferred—especially where the experience relates to school or guidance counseling.
• Candidates with independent school experience will be given preference, but experience in a public, charter or religious school is also considered advantageous.
• Knowledge of modern pedagogical principles, learning and human growth and development theory, and interpersonal, cultural, and social foundations.
• Experience with trauma-informed education, emotional regulation, mindfulness practices and behavior intervention support.
• Certification through either NBCC or NBTPS is also preferred as is membership in ASCA or similar professional organizations.

Potential Benefits: Compensation and benefit packages are competitive but will differ by school and will typically depend on geographic location, your experience, and your level of degree.
