This is a temporary position expected to run from June 24, 2024 through August 14, 2024. The August Wilson Summer Intern is a temporary staff members who learn from and work alongside museum staff in a variety of professional roles building skills for future educational opportunities and art museum careers. Interns perform work that contributes significantly to museum projects and initiatives, or to ongoing delivery of professional services and programs for the public. The interns attend and/or participate in meetings with and shadow museum staff, attend museum programs, and carrying out projects under the supervision of museum professionals. Activities could include short or long-term projects in one or more departments and are balanced between discovery of the wide range of careers in art museums and projects that concentrate in specific departments. Interns also complete independent projects and document and report on their experience for a capstone project.QualificationsEducation and Experience: Candidates must be current high school students. Summer interns may be graduates of the most recent school year.Knowledge, skills, and abilities: The position requires a creative, open- minded thinker with curiosity about art and artists and a genuine interest in understanding art museums. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are preferred. Interns must thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, have demonstrated success in following projects and assignments through to completion, and evidence of projects completed with a strong sense of pride in the quality of one’s work.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires some occasions that involve remaining in one place and/or moving about for up to 3-4 hours at a time in the galleries.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND AccountabilitiesMeet with and shadow museum staff in a variety of departments and functionsAttend public programs participating alternately as a participant, contributor, or observer learning from and contributing to the experienceComplete work assignments and tasks under the direction of staff in one or more departmentsMeet with Manager of Community Relationships regularly to identify an independent project and to monitor progress toward completion of the projectDocument and summarize experiences, insights, and recommendations in a format that can be shared with the museum at the completion of the internship.Have some fun, meet some people, become comfortable in the professional museum environment.
