Carnegie Mellon University is Hiring a Software Developer - School of Computer Science - HCII Near Pittsburgh, PA

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

We are looking for a part-time Software Developer that can help us in developing weaudit.org, a site to help combat AI bias. Responsibilities would include maintaining the web site, using HTML / CSS / JS in developing front-end tools, maintaining the backend database and Lambdas on AWS, and more. We're looking for someone with a lot of initiative and can work well with Master's and undergrad students in maintaining the site and building out new tools to help combat AI bias.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Uses a variety of software packages to input, manipulate, collect, and record results or observations.
  • Performs research experiments following experimental protocol and procedures. Researches and documents information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Summarizes statistical information for analysis, examination, or presentation; writes technical reports. May build and validate quantitative models.
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • May program software in support of job functions. Attends project meetings.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 1-3 years of research, data collection, and analysis experience.
  • Strong problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
