Job Summary: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh – Main seeks our new Library Services Manager for the Children’s Department. The Children’s Department is a dynamic destination library that meets the needs of children, families, and their caregivers who live in the city and beyond. The Children’s Department began in 1899 as the first public library to offer a dedicated Children’s Department and a training school specifically for children’s librarians. We seek an action-oriented leader who will be instrumental in supporting the incredible staff in the Department to provide innovative experiences for children and families that accomplish the Library’s mission to foster literacy, enable exploration, and create connections with all our neighbors.
The Library Services Manager (LSM) of Children’s Services at the Main Library facilitates literacy and learning by leading professional staff in designing and providing services and programs for the children’s department in this historic destination location. The LSM supervises and motivates staff to ensure that all patrons have access to specially-trained Children’s Specialists and works to make certain that all Main Library staff have the knowledge and tools to appropriately serve, support and engage families. The LSM oversees all aspects of the department and coordinates the successful implementation of CLP Service Standards in all of its functions.
The LSM actively participates as a member of management groups to effect change, lead initiatives and contributes to the short and long-range direction of Children’s Services and the Library. The LSM continuously improves and advocates for family-friendly library services, policies and engaging spaces and is accomplished at creating and maintaining partnerships. The LSM is a collaborative leader who works closely with the leader of Teen Services at Main to build a seamless continuum of service to youth of all ages and the adults who support them. The LSM also works cooperatively with the Coordinator of Children’s Services and works to grow innovative programs and services system-wide, across the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week, daytime evenings and weekdays
Compensation- $55,000-$60,000

Responsibilities:
  • Anticipating, identifying and developing services that meet community needs and engage the community in supporting literacy and learning for children. This includes professional development for adult learners and educators, both formal and informal;
  • Managing transitions, effecting change and innovating within a large organization through leadership, strategic thinking and planning and participation in system-wide activities and work groups;
  • Developing skills and abilities of staff through coaching, learning opportunities, direct and indirect work assignments, building and extending trust, and empowering staff to work to the top of their classifications to achieve the Library’s goals;
  • Assessing and evaluating programs, services and staff to respond to changing needs through data collection and analysis; and generating and sharing the vision of a future focused library;
  • Working with Collection Development staff to assess the role of the Children’s General and Historic Collections at the Main Library and coordinate the responsible management of collections based on this role, public interest and community needs to provide access to children’s literature, information resources and other materials.
  • Understanding and modeling the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh brand and mission every day by taking an active role in educating and serving our in-person and digital users – creating and engaging with stories published across a variety of digital channels, including those owned by the Library and those created by other community members
Competencies and Qualifications:
  • Engage and collaborate effectively with a diverse public, peers and staff;
  • Represent CLP to the community (library service area, interest area, or special initiatives);
  • Communicate positively, professionally and effectively; both written and verbal;
  • Lead, motivate, develop and supervise staff and volunteers;
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills, including the ability to resolve problems;
  • Develop advanced knowledge of CLP policies and practices, trends in library science and services;
  • Serve as a leader and mentor among managers;
  • Interpret and implement policy to staff, customers and community;
  • Engage staff regarding CLP’s strategic directions and facilitate effective communication between staff and other departments, branches and staff persons, as necessary;
  • Develop and achieve goals and objectives related to CLP’s Strategic Plan;
  • Evaluate the needs for budgetary resources for staffing, facilities and other needs
  • Manage collections based on role, public interest and community needs;
  • Advocate for the needs of location, staff and community within the context of systemwide needs;
  • Make decisions for the betterment of CLP and location/department using independent judgment and understanding of CLP’s strategic directions;
  • Learn, competently use, and demonstrate technology in all forms.
Education and Experience:
  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited university;
  • Three years of progressive experience and increasing responsibility in providing services to children in a public library, including demonstrated leadership;
  • One to two years of previous supervisory experience required;
  • Relevant experience in service design, coordination, evaluation/measurement of superior children’s services in a public library.
